Shes a beaut man, and is capable of a lot!

Maybe some nice lime green for the hubs, bumper, grab bar and get some nerfs and paint them lime green too. Just an idea. Great quad, I know what you mean about an everyday rider. Be careful, after riding and racing my Raptor exclusively this year and not getting much seat time on my Tecate, last time I took it out I had lost the feel for three wheels.
It came back after a little while though.:beer

I cannot get over how quick this thing revs. It doesn't like to go slow.

Did some more trail riding today. Caught the stock skid a couple times in some ruts and kissed every rock I seen with it. I want 22 inch tires for the rear. I also have some PRM skids coming and Cycra bark busters.

nice choice! you cant go wrong with the new 450s. I would get some large 22'' holeshots or razrs, a too agressive of a tire ruins the fun of a sport quad I think. The PRM skid and cycra hand guards are great, I have both on my yfz.

Raining hard so I'm on ebay doing some shopping. Laying waste to my bank account. :P
Ordered;
- bumper
- skids
- handguards
- mx boots (got to be safe)
Looking for;
- 1 1/8th bar mounts
- bars
- steering stabilizer
- desert style seat
- intake (not sure I need it, stock filter is huge)
- HRC exhaust tip
- HRC jet kit
That should keep me busy. lol
pink you say? Im doing a 400ex for my fiance' and im going all pink with it.... hell Ive been riding her pink blaster everywhere
1 1/8th bar mounts....get those from moose their cheap
think about sending your seat to the mosh's here on the boards to get redone
BigGreenMachine
10-21-2008, 09:52 AM
I've had the moose mounts on my Tecate. Would rather get a 1 piece mount.
I'm thinkin pink hubs in the future. That or black hubs and black shock covers.
Ordered the steering stabilizer and wide grab bar this morning since it is still raining hard.

Very nice. I love the 450r. Until I did some research the other day I didn't realize there was such a difference between the '04-'05 and '06+ (like 5+ hp, electric start, etc)

Everything except the HRC kit and seat are ordered plus a twist throttle kit.
I'll leave the motor alone until winter comes and I want the extra power for the lake/snow.
Ordering my tall seat foam and cover in the morning.

They are quite strong stock...wait until you throw the hrc kit and a few other mods in, it can turn into a bit of a handful at times even for a very experienced rider. There are a few issues that need to be taken care of for serious riding, but overall I still feel the Honda is the 450 to have, atleast for me.

I'm with you there. It fits me great. I don't want to make it too high strung, it has to go slow too. Some of the trails here are 1st gear all the way.

I bought an 04 450r a few months back .. .it was fun, then the rod bearing started to go (i think i bought it that way)
Its now got a +3 stroker crank :naughty: And stage 2 hotcam
its a fun little set-up.

Nuts to that! I have a HC Stage 2 cam, White Brothers Aluminum Pro 2 full exhaust and a Pro Design foam filter kit coming for it...my riding buddies don't know about the cam. Surprise!! I need to go down a tooth on the front though, unless these mods help. 90% of my riding is in 1st -3rd and the 13/38 gearing is too tall. Might try 13/39 first.
Going riding tomorrow if the weather holds up and Saturday the misses and I are putting on some parts that showed up for it. I'll post some pics when its together.
Short4stuff, I'd love to do the stroker crank. I hear its a real grunt setup. :naughty: Might do a Venom piston this summer. :Bounce

Ya I should have thrown a venom in there, but was cheap/ didn't realise the stocker is a "slug" at they call it.
Also I know about the gearing, I was runnign stock for the 04 (14-38) with 22" in the rear, and well I wasn't having to much fun in the tight trails, way too much clutching.
I swithed back to 20"s and went 13-38 and its much better, I also tried a 12 front and that's really short geared.

One thing is for sure, this new quad comes apart easier then my Tecate did. Although I wish it turned as tight and creeped along in the trails as nice as my Tecate did! Much room for improvment.
The handlebars need to be higher, even with CR Double Hi handlebars. +2 steering stem is the next addition. I hate standing and being hunched over to reach the bars. The skids work great! .190 PRM skid and chassis. :) The steering stabilizer is a Streamline piece. You can go faster then you normally would without worry of the bars getting torn from your hands. Its time for the suspension to be done but it will have to wait until Christmas. :D Theres a 1 tooth bigger sprocket on the way for the rear to help keep me moving over the slow stuff. I ride tight trails, 90% of the time I don't get out of 3rd.
Anyway, enough with the novel. Some more poser pics.

That Is a sweet Quad, I love the white plastic!!!! A 12tooth front sprocket will work wonders for your low speeds. The engine won't Chuggle down low at all, and Is great for Quick acceleration.
Here Is my oldest boy tearin up on our 06 TRX. Its all stock other than a 12 tooth front sprocket. I will be adding a CRF carb needle, and a 02crf cam to mine, and that will be about It. These quads are SWEET, but yes the bars make you feel like you are going to flip forward over them when you stand up

I'm not putting on the bigger rear sprocket until after the pipe/cam are installed. Hoping those two are going to give the bottom end a real boost.

Thinkin about some 23 inch front and 22 inch rear tires. Really could use the gain in ground clearance.

11-16-2008, 06:29 PM
Thanks 3Razors. All those bars are still shorter then stock. Even the Raptor bend ProTaper's that are 5.** inches tall are shorter then stock.
I'm going to buy a used stem and extend it 2.5 inches. :) Yes it'll bend when I roll but it will give me a good feel of what I need before I buy an aftermarket version.

Installed my WB full exhaust and Pro Design intake today. Installed the HRC needle and was working on the main and mixture screw when I ran out of daylight. Should have it finished up tomorrow. There is no way to tip the stock 08 FCR enough to take off the bowl, the carb will have to come away from the head.
tecat-z
11-17-2008, 06:15 PM
You should be able to replace the fuel screw, and gain access to the main and pilot through the bowl drain, without removal of bowl. Just make sure you retain the o-ring and small washer on the end of the fuel screw, if it has a stock screw. The trx may have the tamper proof smog plug that needs removal.
BigGreenMachine
11-17-2008, 07:46 PM
Yeah? Thanks for that tecat-z!
You mentioned the Rekluse clutch. Does that take away the ability to use the clutch?
I think a heavier flywheel would be a good option too. ...and it would still let my g/f learn about using the clutch instead of taking that away.

Jason Hall is very familiar with the recluse auto clutch, and it's fine tuning. He turned my buddy onto them, on a dune ride, due to him having stalling issues. The clutch still operates at launch if you desire, or take off like a regular auto clutch atv. Stall speed is adjustable, and butter smooth shifting. But, no more stalling. Just make sure you richen up the pilot and needle as already mentioned. If not jetted correctly with your new exhaust, it will want to "flame out" not stall out. If you're after torque for your trail type riding, i might reconsider changing cams. Cam changes are almost always geared toward more H.P. which means higher rpm. This changes engine character to a more aggressive tune and high strung nature. You can't "get" and not "give" if you know what i mean.
BigGreenMachine
11-17-2008, 10:05 PM
I have the HRC Jet Kit and a ZipTy fuel mixture screw to go in the carb. From what I've seen on paper the Hotcams Stage 2 cam is pretty well rounded.
I'll probably try to track down a heavier flywheel first as I don't want to lose the clutch.

Well I had to take the carb out of the airbox and intake boots to get at the bowl. The leakjet is in the bowl so it had to come off.
Anyways I went riding and bottom to mid is smooth but topend theres a wicked stutter.
I'm not sure if its a lean stutter or a rich stutter. Rich would be more of a bog right?
I'll figure it out in the morning, take off the airbox lid and if that solves it then its rich. If not, lean.
My cam should be at the dealer tomorrow so I'd like to get this jetting sorted.
Little trail rid today too, man that Rekluse would have been nice!
BigGreenMachine
11-18-2008, 09:25 PM
Couldn't wait until morning. Just took the lid off and went in the road for a ride. WOW! No stutter at full throttle and it pulls hard all the way from idle! It was choking for air according to another forum I'm on. The 162 main was too rich with the lid on.
The difference in power is very noticeable! Very impressed at what a few bolt-ons have done to this thing.
I have to adjust the accelerator pump in the morning too as well as the airscrew.

You have the same bar setup as I do with the cycra handguards, I put 2.5'' rox risers on mine to raise it up and they work great.
Jason Hall
11-22-2008, 04:00 PM
You need to change the leak jet In the float bowl to a smaller size. I think a 70 Is what they come with stock. I run a 45 leak jet In my crf450 carb. My crf had a 55 leak stock, and If you romp the throttle real quick, It would stumble or stall.
Did you open up the exhaust yet by removing the baffle. If you pull that out, you should be able to run a 175 main, and have a real ripe runner.
I didn't read the last few posts like a dummy, I see you changed the pipe and leak jet.

Awesome man. I bought an 04 new then sold it to buy an 06 and ended up buying the Harley and a 400ex instead. I'd like to get another 450 though. They are really amazing. Mine had the HRC kit, white brothers filter and Yoshimura full system. All I have to say is wow and the 06s are pumped up quite a bit more than my old one.

The dealer is going to adjust the accel pump for me when they put in my cam Wenesday.
Its running great. The power with the airbox lid off is much improved. Nothing like stock was.
Also won a +2 Denton antivibe stem last night on ebaymotors, chrome! haha

I will need tires soon. The stockers won't hold up to fast rides out the local fire road much longer. Its the steering stabilizer's fault, keeps you on the gas over rough stuff that without it you would have to be on the brakes.
Turn this into a trike next year? lol Might just find a cheap 450R to do that with.

Did the Green Wire Mod tonight which adds an extra 1000 rpm to your rev limit putting it just under 11000 rpm. Works great with the cam, just keeps on pulling. All you do is snip a wire and there you go, 1000 more rpm.
Ordered a Quadtech desert seat kit too earlier today.

Rode with the girlfriend today. She rode my 450R the whole time while I rode the ol'man's Kodiak 450 4x4 (couch!). All the trails had a foot of snow in them which is always fun. The ponds we ventured out on had 4+ inches of ice (we checked). No studs and the quiet core was in the pipe. We came apon a nice cow moose just behind my house, suspect she hid her calf behind the trees when she heard us coming.

I would really like long travel and 23/22 inch tires for the 450R, its definately on the list for next season. :Bounce Wonder how the Banshee will behave when I push it like the R....probably going to fail that test until it gets some better suspenders. shens (don't have it yet....blah)

Hey Saul, yeah we got all that rain last night. Driving by some of the marshes I can see the sled will be pretty useless. Hope the buyer still wants it....
Ruined a rim on the R the day after that. Going to get some ITP's from Hondaone soon.

Well I busted a rim two weeks ago and had some used ITP t9's arrive by mail this morning. After two weeks of no ride time it felt awsome to get back to it.
The sled finially sold. I had wanted a dirtbike so I picked up a nice 04 CR125R. It isn't as quick as I had hoped and the powerband makes it real awkward to trail ride. I should have shopped around more. Its up for sale now but I'm going to log as much seat time as I can on it while its here.

Sold the dirtbike, what a mistake of a purchase that was. Riding today on another sunny spring day. So great being able to ride right from your back yard.

I haven't followed this thread James, it looks like you've been busy. Is the snow already gone up there? Looks like a great day to ride. The 450R looks good, glad it's doing well for you. No sled, no bike, what's next? Maybe buy another R for the g/f? Take care, Chris

The snow was all gone last week but then we got a dumping of 3 feet overnight before the weekend. This has been the worst winter for lack of snow I've seen in ages.
Buying a small pickup for myself next, maybe today. The next quad I buy will be a utility, maybe the old mans Kodiak. The fiancee is buying a KTM 525XC when she can. :D

[QUOTE=Jason Hall;676624]
Did you open up the exhaust yet by removing the baffle. If you pull that out, you should be able to run a 175 main, and have a real ripe runner.
QUOTE]
Jason, how do you feel about the 175 main?
I've been running the baffle in my White Brothers pipe and the airbox lid with three 2" holes towards the back of it. Reason being to keep water out of the box. Seems to run strong but I hauled the lid and baffle today and it felt stronger.
I think I'm going to change to an K&N with a prefilter and cut more from the lid. I'm gonna put in a 175 main and see what it does.
Going to replace my plug soon so I'll chop the threads off and see what it can tell me.

BGM, you will have No problem running the 175!!! If you take the baffle out and do like you said with the airbox, you will be GOLDEN. I have a 175 main In my 06 TRX with the stock exhaust, baffle pulled out, and airbox lid removed.

Thanks Jason! Wondered if you would read that.
Ordered the K&N this morning with the 175 main.
I did cut 4 more 2 inch holes in the front of the lid and have been running without the baffle in the WB pipe. It is definately stronger with the baffle out. Reason I say this is the front end can be brought up much easier in the higher gears.
Cannot wait to run the new filter and bigger main!

Did some more trail riding this evening. Stopped to look at a coyote track and snapped some pics of the quad.
Yote track, following moose and their calves.

I know i've said it before, but man is that some beautiful country up there! I'm jealous of the fact you can actually wear tires out. Considering the fact there are no more places to ride where i live, you have a very good problem....

I don't think any tires will last long on a 450! Too much wheel spin!

What type of Razors are those? How do they perform on the front and rear compared to stock? Is the rear-end still able to be whipped out around corners? I also jealous of the beautiful country! Looks like awesome land to ride on!
BigGreenMachine

Razr2 6 ply front and Razr 4 ply rears. They aren't radial and feel squirmy compared to the stock radials but boy do they hook! More then able to whip the rear out still.

I don't think it's going to matter, just make sure that you compeletly disconnect that other breakline. As long as it doesn't connect to anything, from either end of the line, than it won't hurt anything just sitting there.

R is on its second topend. Sucked water through the topend and it ruined a piston and cylinder...
