my bother has one it looks easy to do
we call this kind of hybrid a REX since its a R motor in a EX frame.
quite a few REXs have bin built check out exriders.com and go to the hybrid section.

When the 400EX came out it was called a parts bin bike. They basically took a TRX250R and put an XR400 motor in it. Hell the 400EX's and 250R's even came stock with the same tires!

i have the 400ex with the 250r motor. it actually has more room forn the motor then the 250r chassis. none off the motor mounts are line up rite and the 250r plastic wont bolt rite onto a 400ex chassis. even the a arms wont fit rite onto each other.
your best bet is to get a complete 400ex with a wasted motor to do the swap.
here is a the only pic of it i can show you due to the dumb size limit.

yeah thats what i'm looking for is a good rolling chassis, so the 89 R fenders won't bolt up at all? or does it just require some bracket building also will the swinger bolt go through the engine case or is that a problem

250r motors never went threw the swingarm. mine has a modified rear motor mount piece from a 86 trx250r thats been cut up to fit into the center of the swingarm bolt.
the 250r fenders wont fit at all without major brackets being biult and the 400ex ones are cheaper to buy anyways brand new from honda. the seat wont line up rite either. just use all 400ex stuff except motor related items

you would be better off using a 400ex they handle better then a 450r. 450r's have better suspension though. the 06 and newer 450's push in the corners the 05's and older ones dont do it. honda changed some stuff with the front spindles and hubs and screwed it all up.

A lot of guys run the 04/05 450R spindles and a-arms which makes them turn tighter then the 06-up.
My '08 has a horrible turning radius and will get the cure when I can afford to splurge on it. As for the motor swap, it'll happen but not right this minute.
Post up some big pics of yours Jason, we don't care if its dirty! :D

I had an 04 450R and the turning radius sucked compared to a 400EX, a lot of people were grinding the stops. I thought one of the things they changed in 06 was fix the turning radius?
And why put a 250R engine in a 450R? Yuck. Lot of people do the opposite.
would you think it would be worthwile to try to trade my fiance's 02 400ex for any year trx250R?
now that I got it running good it only has a little crack in the front fender and normal wear other wise.
think someone would bite it?

I'm sure you could find someone to trade. Maybe your fiance is just hard core. lol. But I think most women would prefer a 4 stroke with electric start over a 2-stroke with kick start, I know my girl friend does.

Well shes a bit hardcore, she ripped on her blaster, plus the 250R is lighter and without reverse the 400ex can be a pig to straighten up in the trails. She will have to ride it more before I may do that...we'll see.

Ye, well sort of, i bought the bike for the engine ( as i need the 450 power plant for my HRC 450r), then i bought a couple of 85 motors from xsystems here on the boards, so i decided to build a nice race quad for my son using one of the 85 motors.
so whats the final weight? how does it compare to the old powerplant?
Well, not sure on the weight syko, but i like the bike, all though i have'nt had much seat time, certainly not as much torque as the 450 motor but i love the ability
to rev the 2 stroke.
Guys,,,,,am a bit busy tomorrow, but i will clean the bike up and post some glamour shots, tomorrow night or wednesday.
Sort of a mad rush over the weekend, fabing up the front engine mounting brackets and re configorating the exhaust to fit, but everything turned out sweet.:w00t:, i'll post close ups of the engine mountings ect if anyone is interested.
I built the bike for my son, so he has really been the only person on it, as it was given as a xmas present and due to myself working over seas i never managed to finish the bike until sunday morning  .
So he has just started to learn clutch, shift ect - he's over the moon with his new bike!:Bounce
