I have a semi-auto Beretta that is in my pocket all day with two 7 round clips. Sometimes I carry my Smith and Wesson .357 5 shot revolver with a 2 inch(?) barrel. Other than that I have a cheeze-o Mossberg Maverick Wal-Mart edition and a single shot .410.

I shot a Glock 22, 40S&W a couple of days ago. That gun has a very smooth action. I will be getting one of these soon. I went to a gun show a couple of weeks ago with intentions of getting a Glock, but I came across my Smith and Wesson for a price I couldn't turn down. I will have a Glock very soon.

Which Glock is your favorite???

Marlin 22 bolt, Winchester 30-30 lever, 50 cal muzzle loader, savage bolt action 12 gauge, uplander side by side 12 gauge, and a wasr-10 ak47 with blonde furniture.

Hey Wheelie king, I got a question. About 4 years ago I was processed for small amount marajuana and paraphenalia, and my record was exponged with a section 17. Will I run into any problems gettin a CLEO to sign an FFL form to get a tax stamp for an SBR or SBS? I really want to get these bad boys

I'm also going through a DUI conviction too, but that will be exponged after ARD. I'm pretty sure the State Police still keep records of this stuff though. Thats why I'm wondering If these past charges are going to be a problem.

The legal limit is 18''. You have to pay to get a short barrel shotgun, legally that is.

Yes, even expunged records are accessible. Will you have any problems? The short answer is "it depends". If the records are expunged, or the disposition is not guilty or dismissed/no prosecution/ etc., then still it should not be a problem. If you have nto been convicted of a violent crime or misdemeanor of domestic violence and can still LEGALLY buy a gun, you should be able to get resistered for a SBR . All the feds really want it your $ and your info.

Back on the guns, I simply love the glock 23, which is the midsize .40. I own one personally and have one issued to me through my agency. Great weapon. The glock 22 is the full size .40 which is the most carried patrol officer weapon by law enforcement in the US. And for good reason.

Hey P-dog!! I just bought a Mosin Nagant on Wednesday- Numbers match- In darn good shape, with sling, bayonet, ammo pouch, etc... 100 bucks!!!! You shoot yours regularly???? I like that little Walther!!!

Finally- In a previous thread I posted the pick of my new AR-15 that I bought November 5th in celebration of our new empty suit of a leader. I have added some accessories to it since this photo, but I had this one made for me. I had to cheese it up and have the laser engraved initials. I just had to.....:D

Hmm ok, is that 18'' barrel, or 18'' overall? My understanding was 18'' was the shortest barrel allowed, but it had to be 26'' overall length.

Back to other guns...I bought me a Walther P22 today. Pretty nice little gun, I like it...feels good in my hand and is extremely light! Here's a pic of all my guns....

Yeah they have been pretty plentiful and cheap. I have the PU mount, a turned down bolt, and a custom cocking ring. I love to shoot it. They are heavy, Loud and accurate with a helluva punch. Oh, the triggers are really heavy. I would recommend a trigger replacement. Try Huber concepts for that and the ebay for the bolt handle and cocking Ring. Mines a 1947 izhevsk M44. I like my p22 as well. I'd love to have a real silencer on it. that would be sweet. I hear that on a 22, all you hear is the slide open and close.

The Goat

Pirogue I may have built one a few years ago for the rifle.

Mine was only a single chamber... So initially you only heard the click of the firing pin and a sound a lot like a richochet but a lower tone. But since it was only the one chamber, you would hear the gunshot reverberate off the nearest large obstacle, sounding like the shot came from over there.

I think it's 150 with ATF to legally have a silenced gun.

Many plans available online, the best designs seem to be stacked drilled cones inside of the tube.

Mine was large, 14 long 2 inch pipe... High temp PVC filled with steal wool and grease, small drilled pipe inside, and whole wrapped in duct tape in case of a blockage and explosion.

You could hear the firing pin click, very cool. I always wanted to do a mini14 like that. Cut down barrel with 18 inch can on it.

There is some idiot in the classifieds today in my local paper trying to fetch $1500 for a hungarian AK that has NOTHING on it. Do a search for "Gun Trust". You'll bypass A LOT of the red tape and don't need the CLEO sign-off.

Haven't seen any Norinco's go for less than 300. There are less of them around since theyre no longer imported. There are plenty of Yugos around for cheaper though. I don't know about 100 though. I'd like a soviet.

Oh, and I have a pellet rifle in my collection too!!!!!! Stop clownin'. Nearly cut the tip of my left middle finger off with that thing when I was about 10! We go way back!

Not to jump off topic, I went to a gun show today. We have about 2 a month here in OKC. I go to a lot of them, but this one was a joke. I basically paid $10 to get into a flea market with like 2 gun tables. Those tables were the regulars too. I have already seen thier guns and thier prices. Some of these shows are a joke.

Hey Wheelie King, I am really wanting one of the Glocks. Does the 23 shoot as well and as smooth as the 22? After I shot that one, I have really been looking for one.

The 10 mm is an awesome round, and there are even long "hunting barrells" for the glock 10mms (topglock.com , etc). But, the ammo is not as cheap and/or plentiful as some of the other more popular calibers. The "c" feature is the compensated design which there are several schools of thought on. I personally think it is cool and certainly doesn't hurt. Either way, used that's a 450 buck gun, and 600 plus new.

Find out if it is a later generation glock with the finger grooves on the grip, and accessory rail on the frame. The earlier first generation glocks are without the rail and have the grooveless grip. First gens are a bit less desireable. Hell, now that I say that, I am not sure if there were generation one glocks in 10mm.........anyway. And 50 rounds is NOTHING. Just look at, inspect, and FEEL the gun- that will tell the story of what kinda shape it's in.

AKs are cool and all, and I really prefer the Hungarian ones. BUT...... the Chinese Norinco SKS rifles are much better made and just as easy to accessorize in my opinion. Goat, you are right- can't go wroing with a Norinco for the $. You can get them with the factory wood stock, bayonet, all matching numbers, and in new or excellent condition for around 350. All kinds of aftermarket stuff- I got a Tapco stock with a foregrip and 20 round polymer mags on one of mine. It's a good shooter without the "stamp steel" AK feel. Good luck.

The cheapest one these days is the Romanian WASR10. THey lack the dimple in the reciever on each side over the mag well. They have chrome lined barrels and are supposedly just as relieable. They are usually around $350. You can order one from jgsales.com or classicarms.com and just pay b/t 30 and 50 extra for a transfer fee for having it shipped to someone with a dealer lic. I never met an AK i didn't like. The SKS is a very reliable weapon as well but its not an AK. Every piece of a stamped AK is usually interchangeable with everyother stamped AK. ie: mags, furniture, etc.

That same chinsey and cheap quality is why the AK has that rep as well as the SKS. It is their simple, cheap, and loose fit and function that makes the AK never stop. Cheap stamped sheet metal and plywood. The SKS is actually less chinsey, heavier, with a tighter fitting reciever. Neither are a thing of beauty or craftsmanship and the surplus AK is the cheapest. Not to mention that the 7.62x39 round is one of the great things about both guns. Its pretty amazing what ive seen in comparison to the .223. Wish I could pick up another tomorrw. I'd really like a YUGO or Polish or Bulgarian AK.

Just got back from the gunshow. There were a couple nice AKs in the 600 range. THe cheapos that are usually around 350 were jacked up to about 700. The one I wanted that usually runs about 700 was 1200. There are still dealers that are in line with reasonable values. Its just amazing how people try to capitalize on peoples fear of what King oBAMA may do. I went to a couple of local gunshops before and after to have current price expectations and it was only at the "show" where you are supposed to get a bargain that the prices were way inflated. Even with a t/f fee it is worth it to order online or over the phone.

.22 LR and .40 is killing me. 14 dollars a box for 550 rounds... and 34.99 for 100 rounds for the .40.

a buddy wants to go shoot this week so he can decide what he likes, and I'm honestly going to have to make him buy a box of bullets...things are getting pricey.

I get to guide someone in their pistol choice... it's quite fun.

either the taurus (glock style), the glock, the S&W Sigma like I have, or the springfield XD.

I'm prolly going to push him toward either the .357, .40, or .45. Sorry, but in the words of borat "everyone know that Ipod nano(9mm) is for girls!"

my only stipulations are no visible hammer...and he has to buy a lock box at time of purchase (he has a 1.5 year old daughter). He also has to purchase at least 20 rounds of quality ammo.

The XD is nice, but it has too many damned safeties on it...the sigma is the opposite, the only safety is the trigger.

If I'm drawing on a baddy, the last thing I want to think about is if I'm holding the gun the right way to activate all the safeties.

The Sigma is a OK gun at best. and there is more than one safety. There are 2 other passive safeties, but ultimately like the glock, the final safety is yer finger. I own both the sigma and numerous glocks. The glock is far superior for sure. I believe Spring XD is a FANTASTIC weapon as well, and can be had for reasonable if you want to hunt a bit for it.

Goat, where are you paying more than 9 bucks for a 550 round value pack of .22? Wal-mart by me has the Federal 550 for under 10 bucks and the Winchester 333 round value pack for like 6 bucks...............

i have an xd. if your not holding the gun right you should not fire!
the safty on them are idiot proof!

you never know what sort of situation you may find yourself in...firing off hand at an angle is VERY difficult to do quickly with the XD. for example if you were knocked down and scooping your gun up off of the ground...a very rare chance of happening, but I have no children in my house, or anyone else who doesn't understand weapons...and NO ONE goes in my glove box besides myself, as a result, I'm fine with having a pistol that is not idiot proof.

Wheelie do you have the new style or the old style sigma? the old style with the 15 round clips are unfortunately...CRAP.

If you take the new style, have a trigger job done to it...they are a JOY to shoot.

The ergonomics are superior to the glock if your hands are larger. My hands are nearly five inches wide...and 10.5 inches from pinky tip to thumb tip...I find myself trying to fit A LOTTA hand...on a tiny pistol. The XD is actually much larger than both...but I have issues with the placement of the trigger guard.

The stock pull on the sigma is a chore...but with the job, it's great. I've fired upwards of 3k rounds through this beast since I bought it...I limp wristed an entire 100 box to try to stovepipe one...I couldn't. It's a much better gun than I originally thought I purchased. In my hunt for accessories for it, I've found a couple of GLOCK owners who have also been converted. Am I bashing the glock...Nope, my next pistol will likely be a Glock in a .357...but I bought this Sigma expecting a run of the mill piece of crap...and I have been VERY surprised with it's performance. Just have to ditch the stock sites as well as the stock trigger.

when you do so...you're about 100 higher than retail, and you have a weapon that shoots like something quite a few times the price. I may just be in love with it the way I was in love with the old Beretta's...but this thing is a peach.

as for the ammo...prices around here have nearly DOUBLED in the last two years on that .22 stuff. I used to pay 6 bucks a box for remington 550. Now I'm paying 14 dollars a box for federal... IT AIN'T RIGHT

I have an older sigma SW9VE in 9mm (obviously...by the"9" in the model #) with the factory 17 round mags.....what trigger job do you have- custom by a g'smith or a commercial drop in job??? I agree. I have huge hands and the sigma has an EXCELLENT FEEL- but I cannot get past the trig.............

Last glock I bought was the full size .357 sig- model 31. LOVING IT.

head to a gunsmith...trigger job is cheap... mine is right around 2.8 pounds...it's like BUTTER. I think it was 60 bucks or so.

The original sigma was smith and wesson "trying" to copy the glock... the new sigma is after they paid glock off and basically MADE a glock. lol...guy over at the tire place the other day was a retired trooper, he noticed the magazines in the door when he was pulling my car around.

He asked to check out the gun, I let him pull the slide off, and he couldn't believe how similar it was to a glock...when I told him they retail for 299...he left for lunch as soon as he got through talking to me.

funny part is, as light as that sigma trigger is now...it has NOTHING on that S&W target pistol I bought, the trigger pull is heavier on the target pistol, but has hardly any pull, I can pound off 10 shots in a little over a second.

Those Saiga 12's are sweet. How's it shoot? I haven't had the pleasure yet.

Pretty much like any other shotgun with a couple of differences.

magazines are picky about loading. if you dont get it just right youll be there all day trying to get it to lock in.

the recoil is much more than a typical 12 ga. Before the Saiga i had a Mossberg 500 and the Saiga kicks like a mule in comparison. the Saiga is much lighter than most shotguns ive handled, so that could be where its coming from. There was quite a long gap between owning my mossberg and owning the Saiga so perception could also be skewed.

The Goat
03-11-2009, 11:38 PM
I wouldn't kid myself...I've never shot any gun where recoil was an issue.

I'd say the biggest issue with the 500 series is that the porting makes it LOUD as all get out.

just going by what it felt like in my hand, I'd say it was around 3 pounds or so... that's a fair amount of weight in and of itself.

it's simple physics though...the same amount of force applied to a larger mass...I'm a larger mass. with my arms extended and held firm, the recoil will be applied to my torso...and there be a lot of torso to go around. lol.

maybe I am kidding myself...but I don't see it being that much stronger kick than a 3.5 with a similar weight gun.

only one way to find out, I'll shoot it and let ya know.

the only problem with it is the trigger pull...heavy as a MULE

when I got this newest glock, I had already shot both the glock and the sigma...I got the glock, mainly because I didn't have one yet....and the smith was ragging on the taurus about something to do with the metal...idk.

point being. the glock is going in my nightstand...the sigma is staying in the console. That should tell you my opinion of the sigma. Recoil is noticably greater with the .40 sigma... but when you're firing fast at a target, recoil means jack.

Like I said, here, none. The only way they get any ar's in is if they order 20 or 30, which knock's most dealers here in NE Arkansas out. When the shipment comes in, they are gone that day. The dealers that can afford to order that many just have open orders of backorders, cause he said they just show up, could be days, weeks, or monthes before his large orders are delivered.

factory mag for the 17 and....34 maybe.

works fine in the 19 too.

I'm debating getting that laser that replaces the guide rod...BUT I was talking to the guys at baton rouge police supply...creates reliability issues...the plastic stock piece is superior to the metal it seems.

I have to quit buying guns...I know that much.

all I need now is an 8 shot 870 and an AR...and then I'm complete.

here's a question...Jim's has 9x21 as opposed to 9x19... won't work in these will it? it's nearly 600 more ft/sec

I didn't think the 2 grand price tag was that much, ridiculous and beyond my means, but not that much. They have new barrels for them next to the glocks and those are 799$...I thought that was just run of the mill prices.

That is nuts for a AR. I saw a regular 20" bushmaster at a local gunshow go for 1700.....not flattop regular sights, no quadrail, plain old AR. I thought that was crazy..

I got my DPMS 16", colaspable stock, flat top, for 800 and some change...brand new.

How do you like that Glock? I've been debating between that or a XD.

I like the glock...the 31 round clip is just for jokes and plinking.

It's a little small for my hands (it's the 19 not the 17)...but recoil is nonexistant with the 9mm.

I like it, I don't like it 300 more than my sigma. but the accessories for the glocks are near endless. I like that.

wheelie king knows his glocks...I'm just a guy who reads and then buys what feels best in my hand.

the XD is a nice gun...but it has too many damned external safeties on it for my tastes.... it is SIGNIFICANTLY larger than even my sigma though...so that's one good thing.

I broke in my Colt A3 AR this afternoon, I like! I ran 110 rds through it, cleaning after each rd for first 10, then after each 10 for the next 100. Made alot of noise took my time with the cleaning. I really love the gun so far. Got my scope mounts coming in tomorrow, I got a Leupold 6x18 that I've had in a drawer for a couple years that I'm gonna put on it, not really my choice of what I would put on an AR, but when ya got a $500 scope laying around, I want it on something. I got some more mags and the handguard tool coming in Thursday.

Has anyone tried the BSA Sweet 223 scope? Kinda cheap, just wondering what you thought about it.

Awww. You're so nice. ;)

That factory glock 30 plus round mag is actually a factory Glock model 18 mag. designed for the full auto 9 mm glocks used for Law Enforcement, Dignitary protection, etc. I got a few....of the mags , I mean......:naughty:

I recommend NOT getting the laser max, which is the one that replaces the rod. Check into the crimson trace lasergrips if you MUST have a laser. CT lasergrips can be had for about 180 bucks.

The ammo used in that 9mm glock NEEDS to be marked 9X19, and/or 9mm parabellum, and be factory commercially loaded ammo. Using reloads in a glock will VOID the warranty. That would suck.......

Billy- glad to hear that SKS is good, What a great rifle, man- I tell ya.

Trav- I have a BSA model RD 30 red dot on my AR and I love it!!!! it was like 30 bucks and is made as a .22 rimfire application, but handles recoil well and is not too big- not too small. It has a 30 mm recticle and 11 different brightness settings. I put it on there just to goof around and kept it!!!!!

Sorry for the delay in response, but YES. If I remember correctly, you have a flat top AR with a rail for optics. Mine has an A2 upper with a fixed handle and i have a tri-rail that's mounted to the handle. Allows for use of the iron sights and the scope. :D :D

Anyway, I just picked up a GLOCK 36, which is the compact, single stack .45 ACP. I love this thing- got it this week from one of those right place at the right time "I need money" situations that a co-worker of mine is in. Has a new holster with it and trijicon night sights. ONly been shot a few times, with an estimated less than 200 rounds through it.

Thanks wheelie. Congrats on the Glock. You can never go wrong with a Glock!

I hit a gun show today, I've never seen so many shotguns! There were only a few Glocks there and they looked like they had been dragged there! Really crappy looking, but I'm sure mechanically fine. There were only 4 AR's and an AK, none of which I flipped out over. One of the AR's was tricked out with new upper, it had a 20" bull fluted barrel and a cheap ass scope on it. The only thing I picked up were 2 more 30 round mags. A guy had about 7000 rds of Wolf ammo for $450 a 1000, but I have plenty of ammo now, plus the Wolf shoots a little dirty.

I got my carry handle rail in today and put one of my red dots on it, I really like it like that. It looked like it sits up too high, but I shouldered it and made a pass through of the house and it was really comfortable, just right for sweeping a room. I'll go get it and post a pic for ya. I am going to have a buddy take the front sight off, I think I will prefer it that way, and I am not a iron sight guy. I rarely shoot without an optic on a rifle.

hey nights sites over here are 69$ plus tax installed, but I got a question for ya.... how do you feel about the original sites when firing with a lite on the end?

this U and . seems superior to the night sites.... when I riase the gun up I'm always looking at front sight anyways... old habits. and a good habit judging by groups.

granted I've never shot the block with night sights, but my sigma is set up like that and I can't aim it worth a damn past 50 feet or so.

I need a review on these sucks by someone who has actually had to use them in a stress situation.

the most stressful thing the guys at jims and baton rouge police supply have done in the last six months is find their junk in the morning when peeing.

03-29-2009, 02:19 PM
That red dot setup looks exactly like what I got, Trav. You got the carry handle scope mount that I got, it looks like. I really like it, have I mentioned that????

On the whole night sights thing, they're OK, I actually prefer the factory glock sights. I have shot a bunch in low light situations, and actually been involved in stressful firearms situations in low light/darkness. The most notable situation I was involved in was more of a "nosepoint" , and not taking the time to "aim" per se, but rather a muscle-memory kinda directional shot. I hope that makes sense, but without demonstrating, that's the best I can describe it. Plus, I really don;t wanna go into too much detail here..

Anyway, considering that thje majority of shootings and self defense firearms situations happen at 20 feet or less, if you can see your opponent, you can see your sights and/or direct your shot effectively.

I am actually gonna put factory standard glock sights back on my newly purchased Glock 36. But, I sometimes take for granted that have a sight pusher tool and the experience to swap stuff on and off as I like. Hell, I'd take the night sights OFF my agency issued weapon if they'd let me.

Bottom line, practice and train with different sight and optics, and pick your preference. Only you knows what works for you.

Law enforcement is not causing the ammo shortage, it's us civilians stocking up. Since Nov 5th everyone is stocking up. They say that the Y2K scare was only a drop in the bucket compared to this run on ammo and guns. The small dealers around here have told me that their suppliers of ammo, mainly 223, 9, 40, 380, have told them that if their orders are not currently on backorder, to not place any more orders because they will not even process them for backorder until further notice. One dealer had ordered 200 boxes of 380 shells a couple monthes ago and they sent him 4 boxes and said that was all he would be getting on his order. I know that not all places are like this, yet, but it's coming.

The Goat

this reminds me of the same ammo shortage there was two or so years ago....I'd imagine wheelie can attest to the slightly paramilitary nature police forces seem to be taking on.

honestly around here there is no shortage except for 9mm magsafe and glaser...everything else is in stock and staying so.

I grabbed all cabelas had the other night in cheap plain 9mm in brass... the sales guy just came right out of the back with a case and loaded the shelf back up.

.22 is where it is at though... one box of .22 ammo equates food for nearly forever. much less 20 boxes.

anyone want some MREs...I've been slowly stashing cases the last few months.

YEP. My agency had to order stuff we did not even want for carry rounds, cause Winchester cannot fill our order because of civilian demand. And, we gotta go with Winchester cause it's on the state contract.

Pretty spooky, nonetheless.

And most agencies may be "training" more with snap caps and situational drills with dry fire, but most are not "shooting" any more, as a general rule. Everyone is feeling the pinch.

Training is key, baby.

Be safe everyone.

Here's a couple of mine. Remington 870 Express Magnum and a 870 Tactical with a Knoxx stock. Both are fairly new and I can say that the Tactical is a better quality hands down. I recently ran about 100 shells through each and the regular 870 failed to feed 3 times. The action is also much smoother. I guess quality isn't what it used to be.

Are you talking about a Hi-point? If so, they have proven to be very reliable. I bought the .380 version. I have since put about 500 rounds through it without one failure. The only hi-cup it has had is that it failed to load the first round the first time I used a 2nd new mag. It has been flawless every since. 1911's are badass. Shoot one, you'll understand. They may be "old" technology, but they have been constantly updated through the years and are still being updated. I shot a Springfield Armory 1911 G.I. spec a few weekends back and absolutely fell in love with it, like it MUCH better than my S&W M&P .45.

Also .45 isn't so slow if you step down the bullet size a tad.

Ahhh, yes. The .45- or as I like to call it, the "flying ashtray"

A 1911 is a fantastic weapon in the hands of someone familiar with the mechanics of the pistol, and capable of handling all the benefits a single action auto offers. For those on a budget, the Taurus PT 1911 can be had for about 600 bucks and was suprisingly nice to shoot. I am a Kimber 1911 man, and hell, I bought a Taurus 1911 cause it shot so nice.

I have a glock 36 in .45 as well. Great weapon, also. I like the concealment capability of it, and it has a good feel in my hand.

My buddys' new toy just arrived. Can you say "20mm"! Anzio Iron Works is the company that built it. He has a bunch of shells and bullets and powder and has to start loading some rounds. This thing ought to pack a punch. He has 2 .50 caliber rifles, one a single shot that you have to remove the bolt each time and the other a clip fed rifle. Those were crazy to shoot, I can't even imagine the 20mm. It is the same length as the .50 cal, but 4 times bigger around! They used the same length as the .50 so the 20mm rounds could fit in the same area as the .50 so they could fit in the wing areas without having to redesign the wings or WW2 airplanes that were fitted with the 20mm cannons in place of the .50 cal guns.
It weighs in the neighborhood of 125 lbs. give or take.

I do love the .357 sig (auto) and the 10 mm is a good round overall, but the .45 is the best IMO for availability, control, and stopping power (NOT to be confused with penetration-which is not always what you want).

The walmart shelves here are a joke- NO ammo.

Want to elaborate further on the .45 WK? I don't mind a good rant.

I've been stocking up on scattergun ammo to break in the 870 with. Got some hollow point slugs, solid slugs, BB, #00 buck and 300 rounds of cheap skeet shot so far.

I think If I buy another hand gun anytime soon, its definitely going to be in the .45 flavor. It wont be great for plinking, but it'll throw lead like a mofo and thats what I'm looking for at this point. :)

Want to elaborate further on the .45 WK? I don't mind a good rant.

Well, MY OPINION is not gold, but is also based on real life experience. And I am not beating my chest in saying that, either. :(

But anyway, the 45 is great for the 3 best things it has- availability (in this market/situation), surface area, and speed. I would much rather have a .45 caliber "flying ashtray" at 230 grains going 900 fps, than a .40 caliber projectile at 165 grains travelling 1275 fps- and here is why: Being hit by the brick (.40) is bad, but being hit by a concrete block (.45), although slower, still slows the thing it impacts, and impacts the thing with greater surface area contact, although it is a slower speed, it still does what you want to do BETTER- stop the thing that is coming at you. I am not one of thos guys that wants my bullets to penetrate EVERYTHING. Penetration is NOT always what you want. Over penetration is BAD, and can affect innocent people, while still not stopping an attacker. Most self defense firearm situations happen at less than 25 feet. I'll take the .45 here, man- A .45 in center mass (chest and torso) area will knock a 200 pound,6 foot tall man FLAT on is arse. Trust me.

And please do not get me wrong. I am not "anti" 40 or 9mm or .357 sig, or whatever. My primary weapon is the Glock 23 in .40. But when it comes to my preference- I just want the biggest thing that I can control with reasonable speed and distance, to hit the bad guy. Period.

The Goat
04-16-2009, 09:37 PM
so you would be very against my .40 cal round that is only 84 grains and travelling at 2000ft/s ?

how does a .45 do in that initial penetration of forearms...the exiting, and then the penetration of a torso? I must admit, I didn't consider this when making my original purchase of ammunition. I have later reconsidered it when selecting what is loaded in my .40 by staggering 84 grains with federal hydras. Firing, I notice no difference in recoil.

when I was first selecting ammo, I went old school...heaviest bullet I could find in a hollow.

I then went to the bullet with the most force behind it. now I question whether those really light bullets are capable of penetrating a torso through forearms (a person holding a weapon)

I was reading, they say most people who fall from a gunshot (nonintoxicated) do so because of a preconcieved notion that they are SUPPOSED to fall.

ever since starting the hunt for the perfect bullet, for self defense, I could chat about this stuff all day, it's just so damned interesting.

lol... come on now trav... we should all know this is downright worst case scenario

I'm actually a very mild mannered guy.

takes a lot to get me riled up....and I'm smart enough to never pull the trigger unless running or cooperating trully is NOT an option.

but if you're firing at an attacker who is holding a weapon...the space in between their forearms is very small for a straight shot to the upper torso. Chances are the bullet will enter forearm, contacting muscle, bone, and then exiting skin (which apparently robs a bullet of more velocity than I could have ever imagined), only then to enter clothing, and then the torso.

come on now, you mentioned doing a walk through your home with the AR...this is the same basic principle.

thinking ahead and considering every possible scenario may give you a split second advantage or calm your heart rate just enough when it counts.

chances are I'd miss the first shot anyways.

shooting at a single silouhette earlier...doing fast draw: My first shot removed the targets left ear (was going for the neck), my next to shots were xring..and the final was right eye.

not bad...except for that funny ear thing. lol... but I know in heavy stress those shots would be wilder.

TravEX
04-16-2009, 10:17 PM
Sure, I did a walk through. I keep a mag of soft points by the AR at all times in the house for protection, but I'm not thinking about how much damage I can do with it, I just know I don't wanna be shooting FMJ's at someone, hehe.

Trust me, any HP or similar bullet from a 40 or 45 to an attacker is gonna get the job done. I've shot enough small varmints and finished off deer with my Glock with JHP's to find out, hehe.

I'm sure you could get with an instructer or someone at a local police academy and see what they recommend for LE carry. Come to think of it, I'll check and see what our's carry. Wheelie might have some input on what bullet he carries.

I understand what you're getting at, not busting your balls over it. Maybe I should think about it more, my son turned 1 month old today, and I will give my life to defend him.

here's a question...would crossed forearms stop a .223?

I think it would...with a leather jacket on.

both arms would be useless...but I don't think it could penetrate torso after the arms.

Is it bad that I would like to see tests?

I somewhat know what you mean about protecting your loved ones...at any point when walking with my girlfriend...I'm constantly scanning. Watching for anything, carreening cars, a person sitting at a counter who's only pretending to be asleep...I keep my eyes open.

The other night we left a waffle house in a rush...simply because I knew something was happening that I didn't like and my positioning in the restaurant was not advantageous. I saw at least five drug deals go down in a bathroom....in a matter of minutes.

I'd rather not have to shoot at all, if I do have to, I'd rather only shoot once.

has anyone seen "observe and report" yet... I hate the movie, though I usually love anything with rogan in it.

One thing I have to say though, there is one gun shot fired into a guy at the end... looks like a .45 from a 1911 in the upper right side of the body between lung and collar bone...

It's about the most accurate portrayal of a gunshot to the chest I've ever seen.

the guy isn't blown away, he isn't killed instantly. He just hits the ground with absolutely no breath left in him.

Glock .45, compact, tritium sights
Ruger 10-22
Mossberg 12 guage, 18in barrel, tube extension, folding stock
DPMS AR-15, 5.56, 16" barrel, collapsable stock...
Mosin Nagant, 7.62x54, long rifle with bayonet
Mosin Nagant, 7.62x54, carbine, laminated stock with bayonet

I need to get a good hunting rifle or two (caribou, bear, moose). I'm liking these;

In the .308 with matte finish...

Mosins are great! Historical, accurate, and fairly plentiful. They are still a bargain for a good shooting rifle and the ammunition can be had for a fair amount by the case. I only paid $125 for the carbine I have; very good condition, numbers match and came with the old bandolier, etc. That was a post election price too!

My top choice right now is the 6.5 Grendel. Great round, accuracy, and Alexander Arms makes some nice ammo for it. Probably use their 120gr HP. The Grendel stays super sonic past 1000yds!

so not only did my engine end up with a fist sized hole in it last night... it did so as me and the gf were travelling the interstate over one of the worst neighbor hoods in baton rouge, my only choice was to coast off the interstate into the ghetto at night. as soon as we roll to a stop, crackheads start skittering around like dogs.

walking up and looking through the windshield asking for money and cigarettes... all the while I'm holding the .40 checking every mirror and watching. a ford explored pulls up as I'm waiting for the tow, he's about 20 feet away with his hibeams pointed at my car. didn't move for twenty minutes or more, just watching us.

I have decided one handgun is insufficient for the car. with four people in that explorer, and a couple of crackheads circling my car in the parking lot, I feel I need something more substantial.

as soon as I figure out how much money I'll have once the insurance company views my car, I will be purchasing either a mini-14, a stagecoach double barrel 12 guage, or a tactical 7+ shot twelve gauge.

I'm reasonably sure the explorer thought I was buying drugs, but the actually homeless crackheads were just eery.

any thoughts on guns with a shock factor? it wasn't until both the tow truck guy and myself stepped out open carrying that everyone dispersed.

when my girlfriend, who hates handguns, hands me mine, and asks if the 9 is in the car for her, believe it was not a desirable situation.

LoL, Saiga, that would have more then shock factor.

My 12 gauge 870 showed up yesterday. Fun little thing but I sure wish it was shorter. Getting a Houge stock for it to change the LOP.

In shotguns I'd recommend a Dlask 8.5 inch barrel Rem 870 (3 shot capacity being its downfall), a 14 inch barrel HP9 (870 clone) or a Dominion arms Grizzly. (870 clone) All would have the shock factor your looking for and more then enough punch with buckshot or slugs.

The Grizzly would probably be your best bet, some of them even come with ghost sights installed and a interchangeable choke in the barrel. Believe they come in 15 or 12 inch barrel configurations.

I'd personally stay away from the pistol grip and get a good buttstock for any shotgun since the pistol grip makes it harder to acquire a target if your not close enough for a hipshot. Would also avoid the coach gun as its only a 2 shot. A high capacity pump 12 gauge is where its at. shens

$800 US for an 870 7-shot? Someone must be on smack where you priced it cause I just bought basicly the same one for $499 CDN...

Search Norinco HP9 or Dominion Arms Grizzly. They are both 870 clones, super reliable just like the 870 and come in a couple different configurations. The only real difference is the price, about $350 CDN.

#6 shot? No. Lead BB through full choke is the smallest I'd go. #00 through a Mod choke is what I'd use. 3.5" shells would make quick follow ups harder as well.

by the way there are 33k gun seats a year due to negligence, police shootings, suicides, and murders. there are 250k deaths a year due to mistakes made by doctors. perhaps we should ban doctors...

If anyone is curious what we're talking about... please listen to the gun rights radio network.

Easily downloaded podcasts on your ipod or phone, or able to listen to them online. They are certainly better than listening to the boring talkradio nonsense when in the car.

one funny thing trav, I've been arguing that doctor point for a long time, a couple of my friends are on the path to becoming a doctor...and trust me people...every doctor makes a mistake sometimes. and those mistakes add up every two years to more fatalities than their were american deaths in ALL of WW2

Alright, now I have both hands free and a clear head.

First of all, goat is right, go to iTunes and download the 'gun talk' podcast with Tom Gresham. He has a 3 hour talk show on every Sunday on XM 139 6-9 pm, but the podcast is the complete 3 hours. I downloaded and listened to every show since March 15 of this year. VERY good stuff, the spent brass ban pissed me off, luckily I listened to the next weeks podcast, and found out they had recended it. He has great guests, Pete Brownell, Jim Wilson, owner of Georgia arms, VP's from SIG SAUER, Taurus, etc.

I'm glad I picked up a 120gb iPod a few monthes ago, cause I'm keeping it busy with podcasts and other stuff now.

Listening to all the FACTS this week has really calmed me down and focused my concern on what I need to do. The sky is not falling, hehe. The run on ammo is just outta fear, no real reason. Yes, prices will creep up like everything else, they are just a little behind on production because of all the sales. THere are tons of internet rumors out there that are simply that, there are no plans for ammo production with shelve life, gun seizures, ammo stoppage, etc.

My LOVE for AR's just started, got my first one in March, and now I want a dozen. Why couldn't my hobby for the past 6 years been AR's instead of ATC's?! I bought 2 more lowers yesterday, just to have them on hand.

The only 2 pieces of legislation out there right now (goat, help me out if I'm wrong), are the HR45 bill (Clinton bans +), and the serial encoding of bullets for ID. I doubt the serial encoding will pass, but I fully expect BHO and Rob Emanual to PUSH the Clinton bans. Did you know that Joe Biden wrote the Clinton ban bill?! BHO is on record saying he wants to ban ALL SEMI-AUTOS, that means rifles, handguns, shotguns, ALL!

If you read nothing but this part, gunowners, do 2 things.

1. Get informed and talk to people about it. Write your Senator and Rep just to tell them you are a gun owner and want them to speak for you.

2. JOIN THE NRA. We need members! Check out the website, I think that they still have a free membership program going. If you are already a member, sign up your wife, kids, friends. What better gift to give a fellow gun owner. I always thought of the NRA for gun lovers, no, if you are a gun 'owner', membership is imperative.

And, if you don't have a Brownells catalog, get one! Click on the link above, call them and tell them that Tom Gresham on Guntalk said you could have one for free (normally $5), the best catalog I own. I order almost weekly from them.

Guys as bad as it is, hoarding needs to stop, but it's necessary.

I only ask if you go to buy ammo, and they have your caliber and you want to buy it all...try to leave at least one box for the other guys. It'll help a lot.

I hit a walmart every 200 miles or so when I did the northeast trip, I only scored ammo at brapps local store.

One of the walmarts had had their shelves shattered...not to get to the ammo, to stop other persons from buying it. When the doors were broken, they moved all ammo to the back, not to be sold until new glass was purchased.
