If you're looking for a .45, I can attest to a Smith & Wesson M&P .45. Very nice gun. If you're looking for a .22, I can say the Walther .22 is a sweet little piece too. I went shooting with mine today, and I'm far from a sharpshooter. I shot a 32oz powerade bottle from 50 yards first shot with it. Went and picked it up and shot it off the stand again. Sweet thing is it has the 3.4 inch barrel too, not even the long one. I wouldn't have expected that out of the little pistol but it seems pretty good for 300 bucks. Good luck...write back with what you get!

For a 1911 style pistol you cant beat the price of the taurus. If you wanna carry a .45 go with a springfield xd-45acp. Its a great gun and comes with a bunch of extras.

1st choice:
+1......and you really get a lot of hand-fitting and custom/tuner-level upgrades when you buy a Taurus PT-1911. No other 1911-style pistol comes close until you start spending twice as much as the price of the Taurus.

2nd choice:
I also love a good Glock 20 or 29 (10mm)

I here alot of praise for the taurus, I was looking at the kimber models, what is the price difference between the two. Does taurus have a stainless model. I really like the look of the stainless, with the wood grips? I cant carry concealed, so size, and such doesnt matter. Just be using it to protect the home, and going to the range.

Yeah the taurus costs less than half of a new kimber and they have some things already done to them that would cost hundreds more to have done to any other gun. You really can go wrong with one, thier 24/7 series is really nice too. In general I really like all of the 1911 style 45's I love the way they fit my hand and shoot.
