View Full Version : RacerX getting a makeover. (FINISHED)

Well, since the winter is here and I have no other projects to work on at the moment, I figured I'd tear down the infamous RacerX and give it a complete once over. I've actually been working on this since the beginning of winter. I've completely tore down the bike. Every piece will be gone over, refurbished or replaced. The frame and hubs will be redone in a chrome blue. The plastics will be white. The motor was finished today. It was tore down to the last spring. Everything got mic'd, refurbished and reassembled. The swingarm will get a fresh coat of mothers and a polish along with other small parts. The axle and such have allready been chromed. The tank is still setting in the garage awaiting it's turn. The tank shrouds will be left off and it's gonna get finished without them. I think most of you know where I am going with this build. The bike will strictly be a grag bike from here on out. Occasionally I'll throw the turf tamers on it and take it for a spin but it's true purpose will be on the drag strip.
Here's some pics of things so far.

DC Plastics on Ebay or here on the boards. It's for the Kawi T-3 but it'll work. They have them in green or white.

Not much progress on the build. The frame finally went out to be blasted last week. Should pick it up Thursday and have it to the chromer by next Monday.

I did get a little bored and cleaned up the shock.

Slow. I've got the frame and small parts off being chromed. The motor is done. I've got to get on the front suspension. The tank needs sent out and done. The rear fenders are in Maryland and need to get here and painted. Still need to get the front fender. Alot of parts need polished and then final assembly and test and tune can begin. Oh yea, and the seat is at Mosh's.

All this ontop of a 350X motor I'm in the middle of and the 250R motor out of my MX trike is down and needing done. It's gonna be busy around here.

OK, bad news. The guy that is supposed to do the frame can't. Says it's waaaaaay too big for his booth (thought it would be as big as a bicycle frame) and pieces with that many angles will run and stain. Soooooo, I'm looking for places to do powder coating. Not just any powder coating but color tinted chrome powder coating. Any one have any suggestions? Local? Good work at a fair price? Hit me up. Thanks guys.

I allready have p.m.'s sent to Buster Brown and Dreadhed. (sp?)

Powder coat for the frame. Spray on chrome for the hubs, axle and engine mounts and rattle can high heat for the engine.

Quick update. It's running. I swapped the plastics and tank from the beater to get her running for now. I gotta tell ya, This thing rips. The first launch I did and it pulled the bars outta my hands. It launches hard. I gotta learn how to launch it all over. Rear plastics and tank should be done mid week I'm told. It should be pretty much done by the end of this week.

To run your asv levers for the front brake, what master and perch did you use? Or were you able to modify an asv lever to fit the stoxk brake mount.

It's running a stock 85/86 ATC250R front mater cylinder. I just ground a little bit on the lever so it will push in the piston and then took a large washer and modified it to work. The bolt for the lever goes through the washer which is under the lever. One edge of the washer was bent at a ninety degree angle to stop the lever from going all the way forward. Pretty esy actually. And you can't see it.

I was looking forward to seeing her spank some bigger thumpers and pingers :naughty:

Do you think the compression is just a bit too high?? I wonder if your already buying the oversized (bore wise) head gaskets in addition to stroking and crank mods....

I'd hat to see you have to double up gaskets, although on a 4 poke the base gasket would be fine.

Don't mind me I'm just rambling.

Big al's performance products (BAPP) made them back in the day and their is another company sill making them and I'm banging my head against the wall trying to remember the brand . I seen one go on eBay a couple of months ago for redicioulis $$$ . Kinda hard to find but you wont blow another head gasket again and their reusable . I ran a powroll 13.5 to 1 stroker motor back the 80s and it was impossible to use a regular head gasket . Maybe start a new thread asking if someone has one for sale . I know I have one in my pile of parts stash and If I can find another ill let you know . The one I have is for a future build . Here is a pic of a NOS one so you have an idea .

Thanks Seadoo. I need to rebuild mine if it's still ok to rebuild on my 200x. The piston binds when you pull on the lever. It cocks sideways and stays engaged. I'm hoping its the bushing and a rebuild kit will fix it. Your 200x looks real nice! Good work man!

Quick update. I talked with Cometic today and they are going to make me some solid copper 200X head gaskets for the 83-85 200X. Cost was pretty reasonable. I ordered extra so If anyone needs one I may be wiling to part with one. You can also call their tech line and have them made for yourself. Big thanks to Shortline10 for the info on this. It should be back up and running by the weekend.

Sorry for you but good for me :D

Thanks for looking into it, without guys pushing to keep parts around for us, they'd go away even faster.

When I saw this post I thought "well, I imagine they'll make me an 86/87 gasket too"

I literally have no funds but I have to take one before I regret not doing so........
