I picked up a beat Honda 110 yesterday and I know it's a first gen because of the round headlight, but other than that I wasn't sure. So I went digging to decode the VIN and thought it would be nice if I could just plug this in somewhere and have it spit out the year and model to me. It just so happens writing software is my job so I whipped up a decoder webpage.

Here it is: http://atcvin.webs.com

Try it out and let me know if it is accurate. I have run quite a few VINs through it, and I am fairly confident the 1980+ VINs will decode correctly. It's the pre-1980 VINs that were a little tricky.

Not sure if anybody has already made one of these, but I like making simple little apps like this so if there is already one it's no big deal.

Oh yeah I figured out my 110 is a '79. Woot first year 110!

I just did my three. The 85 Big Red I have came back as only a 1985 model ATC. The 2004 quad I have came back as an invalid VIN number. The 83
200e BR came back correct.

Can you PM me your 85 Big Red VIN so I can try it and get it working? The quad VIN won't work since this is only for Honda ATC's. I had to cut it off somewhere :)

Actually if it figured out it's an 85 then you just need to check if the 4th through 8th digits are TE040. It that's not in there it won't figure out it's a 250es.

It does not decode US90's. They are easy to figure out compared to the newer vin numbers.

I have code in there for the US 90's, but it may not be working correctly. What is your VIN?

Edit here is my code for the US 90's:

if (InputString.substring(0, 7) == "US90100")
{
Year = "1970-1971";
Model = "US 90";
DisplayResults(Year, Model);
return;
}

if (InputString.substring(0, 7) == "US90200")
{
Year = "1972-1973";
Model = "US 90";
DisplayResults(Year, Model);
return;
}

That's checking if the first 7 digits matches what's in the quotes. I got that info from the Specs section on the homepage.

When you get the bugs worked out of this I'd be very interested in putting a link to this on the main page, and also in the WCH sub-forum. Thumbs up for this thread.

Any chance for other brands, like Yamaha, Kawasaki, etc?

Yeah I could do other brands. I just did Honda for now because that is what I have and those are all filled in in the Specs section on the homepage. Alot of the frame numbers are not filled in for Yamaha, Kawasaki, etc on there. Not as much info available.

If it's any help to fatten up the database, JH3TE040 X GM230319 comes back as a 250ES unknown year.
It is a 250ES, it says '12/85 1986 Model' on the frame tag and it's a UK spec. Don't know if one supplied to the Uk had any different coding?
Would it be ok to put a link to this on our local ATV forum trike page?
Rob.

New and improved!!!

I found a sweet site called motoverse.com that is basically the same thing I created, but better since it can decode trike, quad, motorcycle, etc VINs of all makes! The only downside I have found is that it can only decode 17 digit VINs from 1980+. My new site just passes a parameter to their site and shows it in a window so you don't have to select brand, etc on their site.

Try it out:
decodemyvin.webs.com (http://decodemyvin.webs.com)

My old site for only Honda trikes is still up if you have an older VIN that is shorter than 17 digits. (atcvin.webs.com (http://atcvin.webs.com))

^ You can go and "edit" then click "delete" and it will be gone.

Like any new message board/forum your not familiar with, it takes time but Trikesylvania is where all the trike related questions go, otherwise you contaminate a nice topic (like this one) that I just did myself :lol:

The search feature does not always work the greatest, you have to find 5 ways to "ask" or perform a search to finally find some relative answers.....

I tried it for a parts bike i bought recently with no markings other than the vin stamped in frame. The guy thought it was a 185s. I knew it was a 200 front and tank though. decoded as an 84 200s. seems right. Good job.

My ATC 250R came back as an '87 ATC 250R. I guess this explains why my "R" has factory white fenders and a different ATC logo on the seat. This was very helpful, thanks

anyone know where i can do this with a motor vin? I sa DC's post, and think my motor is also an 85 70 motor, but is there an actual decoder somewhere for engine vins? I see the 85atc70 motors start with 3000001- what is the total number they made in 85? whats the last engine vin in the 85 fleet?? how many thousands of units were built in 85? gotta be up there. How do the serial #'s on the trx70 engines start? Could have come from a trx i suppose, but it does start with the TB03E-

Oh 87 ATC250R mystery solved. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice work on the decoder. I wish there was a way to link it to a national database of stolen ATV's or something.

I just bought a Honda trike. I am trying to figure out what model it is. I put in my VIN in your decoder but it only tells me the year, which is 1984. Can you help?

I think you are right, it should be TB055. I will run that through the VIN checker.

Thanks for your help!!
