heres the deal.im getting a 1986 yz490 dirtbike from this kid( he's to light in the arse to kick it over)the kids brother has a 2006 yfz450 with a bad engine(really big hole in it).my question is.if you were me and wanted to convert one of them into a 3 wheeler, which way would you go about it.

you would be so much better off in many ways by starting with a trike frame...

leevarnado
04-19-2009, 08:17 PM
dont have a tri z frame.

cr480r
04-19-2009, 08:34 PM
its worth getting one... The YZ frame will have the head tube too high and have too much rake to make a decent handling trike..

The 490 would be easier, a rebuilt 450 would be a much better engine.

well just got off the phone with both of the guys.its gonna cost nadda for the 450 and 490.wheeling and dealing, lol.but the sad thing is,im trading my 200x for the 450.i know guys, but its for a better cause.

Are you getting a complete yfz450 or just the motor?

leevarnado
04-19-2009, 11:04 PM
im getting the complete yz490 that has a good running engine and complete yfz450 with a bad engine.

I would leave the YFZ as a quad or part it out.. and use the 490 engine for the trike... a 490 fits in a Tri-z frame like it was meant to be..

Bryan Raffa

you will have to make motor mounts and a sparkplug wrench for the 490

i picked up the 450 and 490 yesterday.so the build starts.im going to put the 490 in the yfz frame for now, then i will eventually convert the quad into a trike.

leevarnado
04-21-2009, 10:06 PM
well today i pulled the engine from the yz.the way this engine fits under the yfz its like it was meant to be under there.minor mods required.the hardest thing so far is getting the pipe to fit up right.got a question.will it hurt the pipe performance if i bend it a lilttle .here's a couple new pics.

While you're searching for a good helmet...find some fireproof pants...your right leg is gonna be SMOKIN'!!!

Very fast progress.

I haven't even been able to find time to put a clutch in my Banshee since Dec 2006.

Sweet nice work. That 450 is in better shape that I would have guessed going by the toasted engine pics in one of your other threads.

yeah that engine was totaled ,guy was wto when the engine locked up.also said that he bought the bike new and rode it very little for 3 months.i was like wow man, that sucks.7k for a bike you only get to ride for 30-50 hours.i think the best thing about this project was that i spent less than $100 on it.and now im going to sell it and buy a mint tecate 3 r 4.lol.

Bryan Raffa
05-01-2009, 08:47 AM
so you not turning it into a 3 wheeler? your gonna sell it and buy one..

i put it up on craigslist if no one will give me at least 3k for then yeah ima cut a wheel off of it.i found a mint condition tecate 3 and 4 for 2500 a piece,if i can sell the 490 ima get one of those.that tecate 3 would look better in my backyard than a chopped up quad.

your fron mount vibrates loose becuase of the design. the bottom needs to be welded or trianglulated to another spot.

nice looking conversion!!

I am really impressed by the speed and (from the looks of it) decent quality of this build. That engine looks like it belongs in there. Nice job.

moved you over to the quad forum, till you decide to cut it up.

super90
05-04-2009, 02:14 AM
If you cut it up would you want to sell any parts off the front end? I wouldnt even cut it up, it will handle much better in the quad frame and it looks good. Just saying, you wont get 3000 out of any sane buyer. I bought a mint 04 yfz for 2800.

xman23
05-13-2009, 05:45 PM
yeah man dont cut it up! no way some one will buy it for 3000 I just bought my 06 for 3200 with very low hours, keep it and ride it its bout the best handling atv your gonna get
