What do you get when you combine a Honda CRF450R, Yamaha Rhino wheels, and a lot of fabrication???

I've ridden it now with just the wide front tire and it is INSANE!! I love it. Should have waited to post it until after I got the rear end done, but I was to excited to wait to share... I'll keep you posted with new pics as I finish the rear end.

Mr. Bracket, we really need a vid of this beast in action, if possible.

Mr Bracket
05-28-2009, 09:40 PM
Wow, thanks for all the support guys! I got a little scared when I found my post had been moved from the 2wheeled section, but I'll take it as a compliment that this project is cool enough to be in the 3wheeled section ;)

As you can see, I had to move the radiators to give room for the wide triple clamps to turn.

I plan on making some progress on the rear end this weekend. I'll be sure and take some pics.

I'll try and get some video next time I take it out. That may be a while though as I want to get the rear end done first. I ride mostly in the sand, obvious with the paddle tire and such. The front end floats beautifully now, but the rear end still sinks at lower speeds and makes for an interesting ride.

I'm doing my best to keep the weight additions to a minimum, I love how light the CRF is. However, I've already added about 10 pounds to the front of it. The rear will be a little worse with the jackshaft and all. Still much lighter than my old BW350.

I started this project because my BW350 wouldn't make it up the steeper dunes here in Oregon. This 450R is basically a point and shoot machine, I'm blown away by the power it has. This bike actually has the Athena 487cc kit on it as well, so it has more torque than a stocker, LOVE IT!!!!

Here a couple more pics to keep you satisfied til I get some rear end shots for you.

Thanks again,
Mike

did we just find a new supplier for custom triples or what?

Mr Bracket
05-29-2009, 08:16 PM
How much for a set of triple clamps?? I don't know, I really didn't keep track of my time since it was for myself. If I had to guess, around $500 for the set. Many hours on my little CNC.

I use a ShopTask CNC machine. Yes, I do the programming myself. I draw in a program called Cadkey and do my machine paths in BobCad. It's a great home shop machine, I build bicycles for a living so it's perfectly sized for what I normally make. Hey, a motorcycle is simply a bicycle with a bigger engine right??? LOL...

If anyone wanted a custom set of triple clamps, we'd have to figure out something we both felt good about. These are the first set I've ever made, they turned out great but I don't claim to be an expert on the subject by any means!

Thanks again for all the positive words! I'll keep you posted with pics as the rear end takes shape.

Here are a couple CAD screen shots for you to see what the rear end will be like...

Obviously I don't have it all figured out yet, but getting close. For reference, the two bent tubes that create the swingarm are 1-1/4 x .058" CroMo tubing.

I've made some progress on the rear end, here are some pics to prove I've not been sittin on my a**... LOL...

I bent two Cro-Mo tubes and cut out some dropouts to hold the rear axle/hub assembly. I also started the rear hub and have the flange to hold the wheel in place. Still need to make the flange to hold the rear sprocket and disk rotor. I will create brackets to attach this swing arm to the pivot point on the frame of the motorcycle and brackets to hold the jackshaft assembly.

Excellent fab work!! but those plates that attach to the pivot tubes dont appear to offer much lateral strength

Hey cr480r, you are correct, the plates I'm using don't offer much in the way of support for a side load. They are 3/8" thick and are about six inches apart so they are stronger than you might think. However, they may not be strong enough for the side loads a 3wheeler encounters while turning. A 2wheeler on the other hand, has to lean to make it around a corner or it will fall over. The leaning transfers that side load into a force that is perpindicular to the pivot of the swingarm and therefore, in a direction that these plates are very strong. The 2wheeler may encounter a large side load in a crash situation, but if the plates bent instead of my aluminum frame cracking, I'd be a happy camper!

They are 3/8" thick and are about six inches apart so they are stronger than you might think.

but they are also somewhat long and have a big hole cut in the center.. but I guess if they flex too much you could always add a gusset to tie them together

I understand the loads being applied, but do you plan to ever jump or bang through any whoops? motorcycles dont always fly straight... the oem swingarm is a very stout peice for a reason... yours may appear like a fatcat, but its still a crf450 and should be quite a performer..

Mr Bracket
06-09-2009, 09:27 PM
Well, I've given some thought to this whole swingarm strength issue. I've come to the realization that it does not matter if I'm right or wrong about it's strength. Although it seems unfathomable at the moment, I might one day want to sell this creation. It wont' matter if indeed the swingarm is strong or not, what matters is that the potential customer thinks it is. Rather than argue the point, I'd like to make something people think is cool and safe. Hopefully I'll not get stuck with something I can't get rid of should I ever decide to sell it.

So, I'm gonna add some gussets to the swingarm and beef it up a little.

Stay tuned for more pics. I plan on spending some time on the beast this weekend!!! :)

Seems you work in a very efficient manor, and major fabricated components come together very quickly. ( swingarm, linkage, tripples, jackshaft) One question though....... Will the rear tire clear the exhaust can?:beer

Don't have a pic of the exhaust and I've already removed it. Here are my choices:
1) move it outboard 4"
2) tuck it under the fender
3) something I've not thought of yet...

I'm leaning towards tucking it under the fender, but I don't like the idea of it getting plastered with with mud and sand....

Moving it out from where it normally would mount means cutting the number plate off of the air cleaner cover. Which isn't so bad I guess. I've added more weight on the left side of the bike with the jackshaft, so maybe, moving the exhaust further out on the rights side is the better option???

I've got time to decide, plenty of work left on the swingarm this weekend! :)

Atc GuY
06-11-2009, 02:21 PM
Man,, I like the option of running it under the bike so it's out of the way, but that would obviously sacrifice ground clearance, plus you'd have to fabricate a brand new exhaust...
I was thinking something like Buell uses:

I know what you mean. But how can he move 4 inches to the right? His side panel right now clears by like 3/4 of an inch. He cant bend it so he's have to take the side panel off... I think under the fender might be the only option (Mr Bracket, will the exhaust can you have clear the top of the tire and the fender when the suspension is fully compressed? Weekend Updates.....

didn't get to spend as much time on the project as I would have liked this weekend. I did get a couple things done.

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg246/mrbracket12/FatCat%20450R/rear01.jpg

Re-worked the rear hub to make room for the disk brake caliper.

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg246/mrbracket12/FatCat%20450R/rear02.jpg

Got that assembly all put together.

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg246/mrbracket12/FatCat%20450R/rear07.jpg

Looks good when all put together, but I have so little room for the caliper, I have to loosen the bolts holding the disk rotor in place to remove the wheel. Sucks, but don't really want the swingarm any wider!!!

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg246/mrbracket12/FatCat%20450R/rear06.jpg

Made a chain guard to protect my leg.

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg246/mrbracket12/FatCat%20450R/rear05.jpg

Made some gussets to beef up swingarm.

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg246/mrbracket12/FatCat%20450R/rear03.jpg

Loosened shock spring and compressed suspension to check clearances.

problem with moving it out, as soon as you drop the bike to that side, its going to smash inward, creating a clearance issue out in the middle of a dune.

Billy Golightly
06-15-2009, 11:35 PM
for someone with your fab skills I'm sure the exhaust wont be to much of a problem :naughty:

You might checkinto the stock silencers off of the LTR450R Suzuki quads...they are sort of an oval shape, they are flat and wide and fit under the seat/subframe center mount. Dunno if it'll help you out any, but check it out. One of those would look SWEEEEEEEEEEET on that bike when it was done if it would work.

Atc GuY
06-16-2009, 02:47 PM
Go dual so you can use smaller silencers and use the extra room to spread them apart so your tire will clear...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v633/baconcrf/IMG_0526.jpg
This is a CRF250F but the left side panel is a from an exhaust kit. This one is made to accommodate the extra exhaust, I'm sure you could get one of those side-panels and make it bolt up, it would give you some extra room to play with...

Try getting a radiator that mounts in the center of the bike, under the steering neck.

there's always a solution :)

other than the rads, the rest of the bike is sex in my mouth

It looks great.. I second the pics of it running. A question about the radiators.. Could you have moved them down the front frame rail to clear the forks? Or was the bottom triple contacting them as well. Not to second guess you because it looks aweome.

I thought the early aluminum frame two stroke CR250s used a single center mounted radiator. Don't know if it would be any better, but maybe something to try or think about. Seems to me like your setup would be just fine, sort of like the first gen tecates. The dunes pictures look pretty nice, how does it trail compared to a 'skinny' tire bike in the dunes? I used to have a BW200, and it was fun at the dunes but totally gutless. Been thinking about a missle kit on one of my Tri-Z's...

If only that was a CR500 in that frame

it would only run away from everything at the dunes even faster.

when the 450 blows up, you should consider the conversion.
bannedcr500riders.com has all the info to tell you exactly what you would have to overcome fitting the motor in there.

So, I tried it out in the dirt for the first time this past weekend and was very impressed! I was afraid I had created a dune only bike when I did this conversion, but it proved to ride just fine in the dirt too! I found a set of used stock Rhino tires and threw them on. I need to find a softer compound tire as these were so stiff I had to run them down to 5psi to get any traction out of them. The thing climbed hills like a billy goat! big rocks and root wads were no problem. Luckily these tires (25" tall) are taller than quad tires so I didn't fall too far into ruts and holes. I'll probably put a 26" or 27" on the front though just to make it even better. I also want to find a tread pattern that more closely resembles a dirt bike tire. The bike is definately heavier, I wouldn't ever try running a MX moto on it or anything. But, I did not ruin it for bombing through the woods!!

Given your bike is also a 2005, I could build a kit for that! I'd love to build you one!!! Sounds like it would be insane on that bike!!!!

I just started making a web page for this bike. I'm dubbing it a "Fat Bottom Dune Bike." I really enjoyed building this bike and would love to build more of them! If you are interested let me know.

I don't want to sell this one, but if someone gave me $7000 for it, I'd let it go and buy two more dirtbikes to convert.......

Dude, no way! You will never run out of dunes at glamis like you would any other place. It has the largest dune area sq mile per sq mile than any other place.

Now Dumont, if you want to climb a hill, Dumont is the place to go. You get light headed just trying to make it to the top of comp hill LOL!

As I said on Dunercentral, Great build Mike! I love this thing. You definately should make a bussiness out of these things. I would love to have one. I am a three wheeled guy thru and thru, but this bike gives me the chills! LOL!

Well I made my first sale! Actually I sold the whole bike a couple weeks ago. Sold it to a great guy up in Washington.

I'm gonna take what I learned on this one and start another one after the first of the year. This one turned out great but I've got a few improvement ideas I want to test out on the next one!!!

Look for a new thread early next year!

Thanks for all the support!
