was wondering how much play if any should be on a rear axle hub when the hub nut is loose ? i have been having trouble with the hub nuts coming loose no matter how much i tighten them they loosen up against the cotter pin. with the quad jacked up there is play on the hub untill i retighten them down again . :wondering

thanks for any info

sounds like you are missing a spacer. should have zero play

the spaceres are there. with the nut loose i can turn the wheels foward and back a little before they catch on the spline .

it is an after market axle . but i am unsure of the brand

Most aftermarket axles have 2 spacers per side for more adjustability. If you can get a pic and post it that would help. Might want to do a spline count on both the hub and axle.

i had a picture but deleted it by accident DOH . but yes you are correct there are 2 spacers per side. maby the hub is wrong or worn.

the axle dosent look worn from what i can see. :wondering

your splines are worn some thats why, no matter how hard you tighten that nut if will loosen some becouse the splines are worn either on the axle or the hub.

yepper.. splines shot, and axle or hubs are shot.. do u have any extra hubs to throw on? but i bet ya its the axle.. a soft alum axle will do it.. perhaps a old durablue?

new 450s have play, don't get to worried about it.

that nut will always and forever come loose if you ride it right...lol

what i do is machine a hub spacer to the right width so that when the nut is as tight as i can make it, the cotter pin hole is exsposed.

this way it can't back off more then a hair.

thanks for the good replys. I will start with the hubs hopefully its just them and the axle isn't shot :-(

what happens if one of those splines decided to take a crap when I'm runnin about 60 ? lol

will it lose control because all the power will go to the other wheel ?

it wont go out at 60mph (or shouldn't) normally they go at take off since that's when they're under the most load.

but yeah, it'll pull to 1 side hard core.
