I have a large backyard (300' X 100') that is grass. How do you kill the grass and get the grass to die and not come back? I don't have any heavy equipment soo. I'd like to do this without buying 100 gallons of weed b gone or something like that. Is there an old tractor implement I could drag behind my 200 to make an oval track? I have been riding the "oval" in the grass on my Tecate. The grass is coming up, or the Tecate is tearing it up.. But at this rate it will take forever.
If you have any ideas, let me know..

Thanks,
Doug

you could lay black plastic out on a sunny day .. a section at a time that will fry it ...

Ride on It, slide on It spin on It. Your tires will shread through the grass then you will have dirt. I just went through the same deal. I had some non aggressive tires on my 450, It would just spinn out In the grass. I sent my boys out to ride, as they will ride ALL DAY If the gas supply doesn't run out :w00t: Now I can get a grip on the dirt where the grass once was.

get some live stock to eat it off. Or get your friends together for a race.

The problem with that is I just want to keep the oval bare.. not the whole back 2 acres.

Thanks for the great ideas.

A piece of 8ft chainlink fence with cinderblocks will take it to dirt in no time. Here is a description.
Chain link 8x8
make a bridle to tow it square
stack blocks or anything heavy on top
drag
It will also take out unwanted bumps and washboard ,and pop the little rocks up. It makes an Awesome rake for that application and will work great for maintenance.

Awesome info guys. I also have about 10 old tires on wheels. I thought about burying them half in the dirt at the inside of the turn on either end. This will be a track for my kids as well. Good idea or dangerous for the younguns?

less things to run into the better IMO. Shouldn't be too bad in the inside of the turn tho... but with kids there is always that chance ;)

you'll save yourself a heck of alot of diggin' too! :D

I know this probly dont meet the EPA regualtions and tree huggers will claw your eyes out. But, spray gas with a bug sprayer around your track. Then light it on fire. When the fire burns out, do a couple of laps. The grass will shed like newspaper.

Look at some of the atc70 flat trackers videos that I posted in the mad 70's thread. These guys are good but can't always make the turn and wind up on the infield or running over the cones. I would use something that is soft and movable.

Just stock up on a case of edog and paint the outline a few times like a football field. In no time flat draggin it you will have your track. I agree with the others no barriers the little ones will find a way to hit them, let them slide out its more fun.

just buy some round-up. 2 gallons ($200ish) of concentrate can mix up enough to kill 4 acres

A friend of ours mentioned the diesel fuel trick. I still don't know how I'm going to do it. The month long furlough starts next week. Picking up my 7 year old daughter in Ohio on saturday, and then working the track with her help and my 4 year olds help. I'm looking forward to it. I agree about not using the tires and wheels. I thought it would look cool, but the thought of my kids all splayed out holding various bleeding limbs really won't cut it.

Now the hunt for a cheap 70 begins. Daddio, I think what you found with the 70 flat trackers is awesome. I hope to replicate it on a smaller scale here in Kansas.

One end of the oval rises some to a small ridge 4 or 5 feet taller than the level part where the track will be. I have decided to make one side of the track go up on the rise making one end banked. I'm excited. I have 10 ton of real good dirt if I need it.

Thanks again guys..

I wouldn't use tires as a border on the track, use some traffic cones. For some reason the town always leaves them along the road around here and I have to pick them up.

You may think I am kidding but several years ago the Pirana from the mad 70s video was bone stock with lawn mower tires on the back I gave 150 bucks for and ran that way for a month or two, far from the 4 race bikes I have now

I was just out there with the 200x with Ohtsu H track 18" tires sliding all over the place. :w00t: This is going to take forever. I think I am going to need something else.

On a side note the Ohtsu H track tires slide like a mofo.. Not bad for $60 with wheels. :beer

NONONONONO. Those tires wont work. you just brakeing the grass petals off. YOU need some serious tires with some traction. Bear claws Realtors super swampers something like that. Would those tires even chew up the grass in the rain? Have any pics of your yard, where you want to make this track?

I think this job calls for a good set oftrailpro they would eat that grass up and spit out a race track.

lmao wyah a good new set of fast treakers woudl work well too they slide nic ein the corners and hook pretty good on the straits but find soemhtign you can drag behind your trike or quad to tear it up. you just need to scarify a lil bit and you woudl be suprised how a old pallet or a couple truck tires chained together woudl tear up the turf

Went out back to work on the track some. Rode the 200x and the tecate around. The kids rode the lt80 that I just overhauled and removed the auto lube. It runs good. The wife found an old gate in the back yard that we will remove and put blocks on to tear up the grass.. On to the pics.. :w00t:

I hate to bust in on a thread but, here is what we used to make our track in our back yard..We don't race trikes seeing that I'm the only one with one but, we race go-carts. We have 11 of them that we mess with. It's alot of fun and I even rolled mine over once and bent the hell out of the front spindle. Here's a few pics of the things we used to make the track
Just a plain old harrow rake that we pulled behind a quad
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll124/tankispmaximus/flattrack001.jpg

Heres a homemade rig that weighs close to 1,000 pounds that gets pulled behind an F250, and works pissa!!

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll124/tankispmaximus/flattrack003.jpg
There has since been some weight taken out of it...It's made out of about a 6 foot piece of I-BEAM, 3 brake drums from a city bus, which weighs close to 200 pounds a piece. And alot of boulders for added weight
And here are a few pics of the track

Yea, that's my back yard. We have close to 6 acres back there. Most of it is getting farmed by the locals in town. Big tax break:naughty:
On another note, I forgot to mention on the bottom of that home made rig, there are 3-4 inch lenghts of re-bar welded to the bottom of it to cut the topsoil
