View Full Version : Thinking about getting a trailer

Thinking about getting a cheap trailer haul behind the scion for when the bike is finished.

I figured the trailer has to be at least 5 ft wide and the length of a 350x.

I have a couple of sets of 17in wheels and tires on 4x100 and 4x108 rims...so I'd like to use those.

The whole trailer needs to weigh UNDER 200 pounds...that includes tires.

Any ideas of where to look. Or would it perhaps be easier (read cheaper) to buy an axle some hubs and have a nice little alluminum one built?

Or how much would I expect to pay for somthing like this.

It needs to be able to hold...400 pounds no more.

After I bought my trailer I ended up cutting the whole thing apart and remade it the way I wanted it. I guess I should have listen to my wife and made one myself, instead of buying one, It ended up being 6' x 10'. I can fit a 200sx, and two 250sx on it. I don't think it ways much, maybe 250-300 lbs.

See my car isn't supposed to even pull a trailer, but the people with hitches and those towing all say 700 pounds or so is the limit. I'd like to stay quite a bit less.

I'll start looking

Here's a sweet little deal I picked up off a guy for $150. It was made for a big red, but I've used it to haul my 350x and a yamaha 225 I picked up the other day. It weighs somewhere around 150 or so. I can pick it up and move it around easily!!

Do NOT buy a roll-in trailer if you come across one.... They are POS junk... I have a 5x8 aluminum, and my father was towing it through a really busy stretch of downtown Minneapolis when the pile of crap let loose and the axle fell out at 60 mph... Destroyed the trailer... A miracle no one behind him was killed when the axle was flying out and bouncing down the lanes of traffic... Got the junk picked up and hauled home to discover when the built this 2000lb rated trailer, they mounted the torsion axle to a .125" aluminum flange... It blows me away it ever lasted as long as it did... * hours of cutting and grinding, a few more lbs of aluminum, and a couple hours with the tig, and now its mounted to .375" and easily handles the 2000lbs...

See that trike trailer would ve perfect... But the rear end has to be 58 inches between the tires... That x ass is a little wide looking at axle and wheels.

Does that threewheeler trailer require lights?

What's the rules on that, my car has no electrical setup in the rear?

you have to check with your dmv on that. Most soulthern states say if you can see the tow vehicle's lights then you are ok with out them on the trailer. NY wants lights on anything but a air compressor

Its wide enough for my 350x with room to spare and my x measures 51 inches across the back.

I posted those pics to try to help you with ideas, that trailer is homemade, and doesn't have lights, although I do plan on adding some red reflective tape on the back just in case.

Okay, the alluminum part is easy, I can cut that, bolt it all together, then run up tue road and let the alluminum guy tack everything.

How about a source on axles?

The most weight this thing will EVER carry is 500 pounds. It'll likely be seeing lighter than that. So I'd imagine a lightweight axle would
be fine. Or no?

Okay, so check with the DMV, I think I'm good as pull behind BBQ pits need nothing. Zbut I'll double check.

Yeah the x rear should be pushing 55-58 inches... Wider than the car.

No matter what you do for a trailer just remember the taller the tire the better. I see people towing stuff all the time on 8" rims without a thought as to how fast those little tires and bearings are spinning.

The Goat

Well I've got quite a few 17 inch rims with rubber rated for 175+ on em...I'll prolly just use those.
