Here's the latest machine to roll out of my shop ,it's the 2010
MDR 70.It's basically a assembly that was designed to fit on
a Honda XR / CRF 50 and or 70 ,but can easily be adapted to
fit onto one of the Chinese manufactured Pit bike's.I have'nt
actually fit the trike component's onto a Chinese model but
knowing how close those are duplicated to a Honda I'm
thinking it would work with ease.

I started out this build with using a 1985 Z50R as a prototype
and to answer some question's and get an overall idea on
what exactly a build like this would consist of doing. The
Z50R is'nt an exact duplicate of the more modern day Honda
XR/CRF frame's,but was close enough to get the ball rolling.
Something's I was looking at for this build were to build a
modern day trike that offered up a plush suspension, good
braking system ,a comfortable ride for adult's, ease in
getting part's,& not breaking the bank at the same time.
But something more importantly was that I
did'nt wanna jump into doing a Chinese Trike.I had to have
it be 100% Honda or as close to as possible.Something else
I was shooting for was inovation,I did'nt wanna copy
what somebody already else built either.I mean there's
some awesome looking 70's on the East and West coast
with the 70's and 80's model ATC's that I did'nt wanna
even try to compete with those build's.I was just shooting
for something fresh. My buddy Sam from Ohio was in the
mist of building a pittrike also, and I did'nt wanna copy
his build either. For any of ya's that have'nt seen his
trike before,I gotta tell you that his is a bad little trike
also,I believe he went with a bigger GPX motor in a smaller
chasis which turned out really nice.

I ended up restoring a beautiful Honda ATC 200M for a
good friend of mine now, "MIKE" and his employee "Kurt",
whom the way it worked out has a awesome Custom
Welding Shop called M&S Engineering in Lapeer, Michigan
,you can check out his website in my link's section at
Muddogs.org .The Z 50R was up on the bench and we were
plagued with issue's rite off the bat, such as the where the
shock mount was gonna be,the backbone needed to be
stretched out at least 2 1/2" to aquire any motor over 70cc,
the angle on the rake was'nt looking good,it was the old
addage of getting the choppered out look again, and this
was just the begining of the build. After about a month and
a half the prototype was all done and I was'nt liking where
the build was going one bit.I had tripple tree's designed
out of Billet Aluminum for the prototype and that was about
the only thing that was used in the final trike.

After thinking about what I was up against on building
a machine too those standard's,I decided that I was
gonna just get a new machine and from what I had
learned on the prototype build, transfer those idea's
to the new machine.I bought a used 2005 CRF 70 with
5 hour's on it and started tearing into it.I gotta good
laugh from the guy I bought the CRF from when I got it. I
told him I was gonna take the cutting wheel to it and
make a 3 wheeler out of it and this guy about flipped,he
could'nt for the life of himself believe that I was gonna
chop up a new machine ,I actually thought he was'nt g
gonna sell it too me,that's until I pulled out the wad of
dollar bill's to pay him,LOL.. He seemed ok with it then,
but his expression was priceless.

It did'nt take long and the OEM CRF part's were on the
floor and in boxes and the tripple's were mounted to the
Dirtbike soon to be Trike.I ordered up a set of invert's
for the front end and worked on modding and finalizing
the front hub, wheel and disk brake assembly. The rear
end was a totally different story though, going into this
whole build I wanted to have a bolt on assembly so that
I could just bolt the whole trike assembly to the Dirtbike
chasis easily and have my trike.Well that took alot of
thought but with the help of Mike at M&S the final rear
end turned out better than I had expected.

After I had the rolling chasis as a trike I had to configure
the plastic's and the linkage for the rear brake's as
well as mounting up the rear caliper, resiviour, and the
cylinder.More thought ,LOL ~ Now if I was gonna start
cutting the frame it oulda went alot easier but after a
day or so I had the rear brake assembly mounted up
with the linkage with just way I wanted it,bolted on.
The plastic's were prolly the easiest part but still
I had issue's with that also, but as you can see in the
pic's I think it turned out pretty good.

So that about sum's up how the build went and a few
of the issue's I had along the way.I'm planning on
possibly putting up a kit in the near future that would
work on the XR/CRF 50 and 70 model's,and that
would prolly be able to be used on the Chinese Bike's
also. The new MDR 70 is by far a very comfortable ride
and deffinatly make's people do a double take,and I
love that part of it.The stock shock does bottom out
on it with a adult but it uses the stock CRF set-up so
all that has to be done is order a bigger one up,just
like almost all the other part's can be ordered.
The way it's geared it has alot of
topend somewhere's in the 25-30 mph on the topend,
but with me being 200LBS it tote's me arond pretty
fair.Down at TF '09 Ditchmud's 9 year old son was
really excited to ride it and it fit him like a glove, but
for any adult this thing is the ultimate pittrike and is
a great cruiser especially going from camp to camp.

I gotta tell ya this compared to the MDR 600X trike
conversion that I built 2 year's ago this machine's
gonna see alot more action ,but I'd say the build was
just about as hard too do.Now looking at it, the whole
idea seems elemantary but it was a brain twister when
it was getting built she had me stumped more than
one time.

What's your thought's on it ,would you guy's be
interested in getting either a kit or a completed machine
if I decide to do something with them?I don't have
any idea's on cost yet but with-in the next week or
so I'm gonna throw some number's around.Lastly
I want to say thank's to the Sam and the Ohio Boy's,
Mike and Kurt at M&S,My Brother Joe and everybody
else for helping me out with getting this machine all
done.

Here's a few more Pic's,I have Sam and mine both together at TF,and a pic of the top of the custom tripple's that I had made up with the Muddogs Restorations logo etched into the top's.You'll notice in some of the pic's the differance in the rake between the Z50R that was pulled in a few degree's vs the stock CRF rake with my custom tree's that even with the z50r pulled in it is still out further than the stock CRF,with no mod's to the stem.

Let's hear those questions and comment's .. Like's and or dislike's..

Rite now I'm working with the Fabricator that designed the tree's to get a more acurate price ,I will have some avaliable for sale in the near future ,I'm not sure if it will be a complete unit or part's yet but I'm still looking into prices.

I think selling the kits is a great idea. I think that a kit with all parts would be great. I have owned an 01 xr50r and it was pretty great as a bike, I cam imagine how much better it would be as a trike.
