  • 3 WHeeLeR WoRLD's December Special Feature! [Part 2]

We're back with another special feature you'll only find here on 3 WHeeLeR WoRLD. Last month, we showed you a really special '86 Honda 350X that was for all purposes "brand new". This time, while the bike has been used, it has a cool history behind it that we think you guys just might like.

This 1985 Honda ATC 250R is owned by John MacDonald of MacWorth Vintage ATV’s in Maine. This 250R is an OEM original and is unrestored. It was purchased new at Golden State Cycle in Bishop, California by 70-year-old Lawrence “Larry” Root from Gardnerville, Nevada. It was ridden in the dunes approximately “8 times”, says the original owner. After such little use, this 250R was placed in dry storage from 1991 until 2011 in Nevada, when John located and purchased it.

Larry told John that he purchased a set of Mitchell gold aluminum rims and Dick Cepek Sand Sport paddle tires for it in 1986; John was given that set of tires and rims. The original set of tires had almost no time on them, however John found and mounted a brand new set of NOS, OEM-correct Dunlop’s on the original rims several years ago. Other than the tires, this machine is just as it came from Golden State Cycle nearly 30 years ago. The original fenders still shine and there’s hardly a scratch on them; it even has the original O-ring chain and brake pads.

A very interesting twist to the history of this machine is that the Larry remembers riding with both Dean Sundahl and Mark Weixeldorfer during some of his trips to the dunes back in 1985 and 1986. Larry didn’t follow 3 wheeler racing but remembers the names of both racers as they drew a crowd. So, this 250R was in the presence of two former Honda ATC sponsored riders…how cool is that!

John also collects Hondaline ATC accessories and outfitted this ’85 250R with the OEM speedometer kit, fender stabilizer, and front over-fender all with their original packaging. As is the case with the rest of John’s collection that you will eventually see, all have the original manuals, brochures, and Hondaline ATC body covers new in the box.

We hope you enjoyed this collector '85 ATC 250R and hope you tune in to see more great 3 wheelers from John’s collection. It is quite awesome that machines of these condition are still out there, and are being cared for. Stay tuned for next month's special feature, as we will be bringing you more awesome trikes just like this. Parts 3 and 4 are still on the way! Remember, only on 3WW!

As always, the photos below can be viewed in full high resolution by clicking on them.
