I see this has been discussed before but no follow up. I just picked up a 85 kxt250. I replace flywheel and stator reset timing to stock. It will start but you have to wear a boot if not your getting hurt. This thing has a 76mm piston not stock. Any one know if the timing needs to be advanced or retarded to correct the issue?

It sounds like your timing is too advanced. If your plug sparks too early on the upstroke it will push the piston back down (the reverse direction) and cause the kick start to slam your shin. By the way, the plug should spark before TDC (top dead center) so the flame has time to propagate and the cylinder reach maximum pressure by the time the piston is past TDC by 15 degrees or so. Incrementally retard your timing until it quits kicking back.

Thanks, I'll give that a try as soon as I get a chance. I appreciate the detailed explanation .I don't know much about timing so any help is better than just winging it. I have found out the hard way that can get spendy.

i think rotating it counter clockwise wise retard it. I seems to remember mine all having the center plate line just to the left of the timing mark on the case half.

I have the same problem which I thought was maybe to much compression or a timing issue. Damn near broke my foot and ankle a few times. Need a serious Boot to kick it over. I havnt had it timed professionally yet. I just lined everything up and she runs pretty good. Throttle breaks up on the top end and I still dont like the chunk chunk sound of the piston slamming the head but I may be paranoid when it comes to this Tecate.

How do you get the timing perfect on the Tecate to prevent the kickback from the Kick starter? I eyed it and she runs but I get my ass kicked every time I try to start her. Maybe 10 BAD kick backs for 1 good kickstart. When I was young, kicking over a 2 stroke didnt seem to be so difficult. I want to get the Tecate dialed in correctly so I can take it out with no worries. Its totally restored with about 4 tanks of gas through it so I would like to think its solid, yet my gut says something just isnt right.
Can the timing be the cause of the kick starter kicking back? Also can the timing cause it to break up at full throttle from 3rd to 5th? I was thinking reeds as its sat many years. I just installed a new 38 mm Airstryker. Any help/ideas would be appreciated as I will be riding the Tecate full time now as my King Quad is having some weird electrical/battery issues after spending a grand on it only to have it die on the 1st ride after I got it home.
    Thanks

If you have aligned the timing mark on the stator plate with the one on the engine and it is still acting up, you can do the trial and error process or buy a timing kit from Motion Pro (see link below). The kit allows you to set the timing using a dial indicator that screws into the spark plug hole and piston height. It is a little pricey for how often you will use it but it will be precise.

Thank you for the response as this has been a major issue for me due to long term illness and crazy weight loss over the last few years. I was starting to think I wasnt man enough to start her and I got hurt a couple of times kicking her over in shoes. Im so glad someone brought this up as I would never have thought of the stator/flywheel install as the problem.
Any secrets on which way to tweak the line up? Left? Right?

Also would the timing being a bit off make it break up when I twist hard from 3rd to 5th?

Got a new 38mm Keihin PWK Air Striker. So I was thinking Reeds before this timing information came forth. Do new reeds go bad from sitting long term?
I just want this Tecate to finally run smooth and be trust worthy. Thank you for any info. Im off to the car wash to clean her up so I can take her apart again and maybe get it right this time.

If you are getting kickback it suggests your timing is too advanced, i.e., your spark plug is firing early and so the piston wants to go in the reverse direction. To retard the ignition a bit, turn the stator counterclockwise (looking at the engine from the stator side). If you have the timing line on the stator aligned with the arrow on the engine case (stock timing), it could me there is a bigger issue. Timing can certainly effect how your engine runs in different rpm ranges, i.e., you can change it to improve bottom or top end, but there is a trade off. Also, radical timing can damage your engine. Timing that is too advanced usually causes the engine to overheat.

You can check the reeds. The stock ones are plastic and can fray at the tips over the years. That causes a bad seal and poor performance.

To add, I just spent the week getting my ass kicked by this trike but I have prevailed and gotten the flywheel off and stator set just left of the case mark.
Now with bleeding knuckles and hurting fingers I just remembered something being said about using

Valve Grinding Compound when installing the flywheel? Am I tripping or is it needed. I have some but not sure how much and how to use it. Im going in so wish me luck. I dont want to have to take apart and put together this setup any more. This is like my 4th time in there due to all kinds of drama.

I remember an ad in the 80's?
