I have an 85 KXT I am in need of a cdi box or to find an equivuilant to replace? Any suggestions? I know how hard it is to find. The part number is 21119-1166. I hear that the 21119-1074 might work yet those are hard to find as well. Please help! These are obsolete parts.

You just have to keep an eye on ebay, they show up fairly regularly. If you want to go high performance (and lose your lights) you could go with the Penton PVL ignition, but be prepared to spend $500. For that you get the whole ignition system, i.e., rotor, stator, cdi, etc.

you can use complete 83-86 KX250 electrical system, but you need the whole set cdi, stator, flywheel, and wire, and u will lose your headlight.

please see my tecate parts thread.

Hey guys, I just did a complete rebuild of my 85 Tecate and the damn thing never started... brought it to the dealer and of course, the CDI was blown. you can get PVL for 530$+ which is all new electrical system and adds on the performance. but i think they were designed for dirtbikes because they have no lighting coil... is there any other place than ebay that sells them?
is there any programmable or ''general'' unit that can be swaped?

you are kinda on our own here. You need a degree wheel to set the timing of a KX system or KDX system with lights unless you chose a like 83-86 (87-89?) KX250 complete system with no lights. CDI rarely go bad but people seem to blame them all the time. I have never seen a bad cdi. The electrical is a huge problem and no one gives any answers to a easy solution other than run KX250 and make your own lights out of leds and a battery

Update I got another CDI box 21119=1074, it works but I had to make a new bracket and it only has one bolt in the frame now. I took it out for a couple of laps and blew the compression. ugh.

I know that '85 model has a different number. don't know what's the difference between 1166 and 1074 though
can it be swapped without changing the whole electrical system?
