A rebuild on my 250r costs about $250 between labor and parts
What does a rebuild on a newer 450r bike cost?

hard to say. if it only needs new rings, around $275. it is unlikely that it only needs rings. the 450s are a purpose built engine and that purpose is to run hard or to be raced. these engines need rebuilt almost as often as 2 stroke engines. if you don't keep up on the maintenance of these engines, well i have charged as muck as $1200 to rebuild one that was running when it was brought to me. he was not doing his maintenance and had a bad cylinder (cant be bored, they have to be sent off to be fixed and coated) valves, crank,......... you will have to get it apart to see what it needs. good luck
i spent 600 to rebuild my CR250, but thats not too bad considering i had the cylinder plated, new top AND bottom end.
Ok, lets say like a two stroke, it's smoking, so it needs a re nikisil or whatever, piston rings, re nikisil, labor. Anything else that would be necessary, and a price for that.

normal top end prices i hear are 1200-1500, and when guys blow motors, normaly they just buy a new one.
screw that
yup you blow a motor on a 450 and its just cheaper to buy a new one!! thats why i threw mines out and put the banshee motor in, it was actually alot cheaper.

So, what everyone is saying that when a 450 motor blows up, it really blows up?

James, these new 4 stroke's are turning some serious RPM'S!! Quite alot more than a 2 stroke. If something lets go, It makes contact and really make's a mess. I have had GREAT luck with mine!!! I change my oil VERY often, because even at 5 + buck's a quart It's cheaper than a crank & Case's LOL. When we were at Gordon's last January, I changed my oil 3 time's In the week we were there. We were running WIDE OPEN for mile's / hour's
The smartest thing to do Is just understand In the beginning these are RACE engine's, they are not your old XR 250. They make GLOB'S of torque, and rev just like your old 250R. IMO If you change the oil Often, and keep the thing from bouncing off the rev limiter you will be fine. The problem Is when you buy a used bike. You have NO CLUE what the guy before you did. In that case I suggest you go through the engine so you know what you have!!! Everybody love's to show and tell about BIG Blowup's. They never mention that It's against the rev limiter all the time and they don't change the oil.
300rman, yes they are pretty cheap especially If you do your own Labor. If you don't allow the engine to destroy It's self, they are WAY FUN. They don't all blow upespecially with a little TLC.

I second hall, change the oil keep your eye on the valves and it should be all ok!
you do not have to RENIKASIL, you can hone your standard cylinder and through in a new piston, as long as the valve seats are holding you should be fine.

I'm just looking around because deals are left and right around here and I am just afraid that I'm gonna buy a machine that is doomed from the start.
Is there anything i should look for when test riding / looking at a machine that would give me the red flag right away? I am looking at 06 and newer models if that makes any difference.

honestly stay away from new machines. if you want one of these racing 4 strokes buy yamaha only. they used steel valves and enegines are damn good.

not sure about the 450's but the older motors were better.
if you get a newer one change to steel valves asap.
ill keep to my aircooled 4 strokes...XR's only baby!
