Yes, you are correct, but freshness and quality come at a price! Here are a few pics of the assembly coming together. New oem shift shaft, all w/p components, all oem bearings and seals throughout, oem fibers & steels. Should have engine wrapped up by the weekend. Have to git the cylinder bridgeported, and then tig on a soilid bushing so it can be drilled and tapped for the fuel pump vac line fitting. Similar to the cast in bung the tri-z cylinders had. I also included a pic of the new clutch cover with the P/V linkage installed. The accompanying bearings have been installed in the cover and center case for supporting the governor which controls the valve operation. A YZ spec primary crank gear has been installed in place of the single gear tri-z gear. This is what drives the governor. All of the provisions are there, just not utilized. If you look at a tri-z clutch cover, you will notice a small plug installed in the front, this has to be knocked out, as well as the roll pin, a seal installed and the pin driven back in to lock in the assy to the cover.

Really glad you are documenting this engine build. So many times its been asked "how is it done". Really nice work. Don't you love how much them new clutch actuators are?! That looks new Jasco ez-pull you'll really like that on the Z. I love mine. More pics of the linkage and how that stuff works if you don't already have it together. Looks great!

Yep I did all this already... all an all its actully a pretty easy swap. The hard part is tracking down all them obsolite parts! On mine I used a 83 YZ 250 cylinder since it had the 8 petal reed cage. Then I used the 87 YZ 250 power valve drum which had auxiliary exhaust ports which I also added to the cylinder along with boyesen ports in the intake.

I've been locating the correct parts for this build since 2005. The cylinder is a NOS piece that i acquired in 05. New valve drum, rotator bushings on both sides, seals and linkage. I have a 84 yz that makes awesome power. Those cylinders have the triple port exhaust. But, of course bring on a slew of problems with them. By using the 84L trans though, the gaps should be real nice. The output shaft of the 85 Tri-z had to be used due to the yz shaft being 1/2 cm shorter. So swapping gears is the only necessary change. You should post a pic of you machine. I've seen two P/V z's in my travels. One of which i never actually saw run at Little Sahara, Oklahoma. When i questioned him in depth about his set up, he had no idea what he had or what he was even talking about. Other that is wouldn't run. So it sat the entire weekend! ( person seemed kinda dumb) The other one ran, but was a hard starter, never got a chance to run it with my stock Z or Tecate. So i don't know really. I'm very curious how this will turn out since i've never seen a successful, correctly assembled P/V Tri-z. And simply installing a 83-87 yz engine is not the correct way. It's actually very far from it. Are you happy with the results? Please post up some pics.....

I will be at my shop today working on my 250R. When Im there I will take some pics of it to post up. I think this up coming winter I will tear it down to the frame and have the swinger frame and all the other brakets powder coated. As far as how it runs I have been tring to get all the jetting dialed in. It wants alot of fuel to run right, it could just be the carb. I want to put a 39 or 38 PWK on it but till then Im running a PJ 38. Which sucks to jet to say the least, but it is better than the VM 38 Mikuni I used to have on it. Other than that I really does haul ass I have alot of time into the port work and tuning. Very smooth power that comes on with are real hard mid range pull. I havent had a chance to punch both the 250R and the Tri-Z off in a drag race to see which is faster. It should be a close race but its tough to say, the R has alot of work done to it as well. Great build so far I hope it goes well once its done. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

A few more updated pics of the engine assy progress. Vacuum boss had to be welded and tapped to accept special type fitting. No press in here. I finished it up yesterday evening, and am happy with the results. Now i can get the bike prepped for it's transplant in the next few days.

I put together a power valved engine.... using a drag ported '86 YZ cylinder. Didn't impress me much, however im not real familiar with the differences in the YZ cylinders. Any how... the engine is setting on the shelf, and im sure ill find a use for it another day. I did pick up an 85 YZ cylinder... intake is noticeably bigger
'85 Tri Z 310 Sprock big bore, cool head, shearer pipe, 40mmPWK, Vforce3, Zinger tank, +8 swing arm Lone star 2+2 axle and hubs.

A few more of the "project machine". I originally bought this as a $150 rat bike back in 2003. Mainly as a parts bike for my all original 86. But in the process of breaking it down, i got that sinking feeling and felt it deserved a second chance. So i began restoration of the machine. I was 90% done including a case up build of the engine when i decided to go the route less traveled. And the search was on for all the right stuff. Which led me to this engine build. Sadly i never started the tri-z engine, so it will join the others on the shelf. The new engine will be installed shortly.........
