Smile Scored a Tri-Z, 85 or 85-1/2 need some help.

So I scored a basket case Tri-Z, it was listed as an 85 on craigslist but I think it might be an 85-1/2...can anybody help. Its got a red frame, silver wheels, and black factory headlight plastic and front fender. The serial numbers for the frame and motor match....jy338w006f0010597..frame and 38w-010597 for the motor. Not sure if its a 5 or 6 speed as its stuck in gear..what do you guys think? I already ran the vin on the decoder but it didnt help. Heres some pics.

Thanks, Bryan, I'm new to the Tri-z, is the 85-1/2 any rarer than an 85 or 86? Is there anything special about them? Thanks

They are basically the exact same as the 85 tri z, except for the color differences in plastics and frame. The 86 Tri z is the rarest of the 3 years, and most sought after because of the 6 speed transmission, and slightly beefier forks, which isnt somthing you cant live without. The 85 trans is def. better on a track, and especially drag racing/take off speed. Mostly all the parts from the 85 - 85 1/2 - and 86 will interchange. The tri z's are pretty unique at the way they handle, and the way it feels when you sit on it, almost like you sit "in" it, which makes for a comfy ride. They are a little more difficult to work on in my opinion, because of the vacuum lines, and fuel pump coming from the rear gas tank, but still well worth it. Good luck, and ask away if you have any questions!

Thanks, again, I'm sure I'll be asking a ton of questions. Its gonna be a while till I start on it though I've got a 250R to finish first, so the Z's gonna go on the shelf for next winters project.

Yep, that was the one, I gave him the $300 he was asking for it, seemed to be a fair price after seeing what was there and what he had already done. Real nice guy, told me about every part he went over, what he found wrong, what he fixed and what he thought would need replaced, he just wanted to get back what he had into it, so I didnt bicker about the price.

I'm not far from you at all, I live in Mt. Pleasant..

    Good buy for 300!
If you need anything for it or any help with it, drop me a line.
I still have a ton of parts to get rid of.

Thanks Mosh, I'm gonna go through and figure out what all I'm gonna need. Wifey put a cap on my spending since I bought this, so I'm lookin at buying some parts around the first week of March. Hey, I think I saw in another post that you guys have new airbox covers and tank shrouds...did I read that right?

Yeah, thats just 10 minutes away, Where do you ride locally? I usually stay around New stanton riding the tracks or head down to the Hunker Slate dumps. Any good areas down around where you are? Let me know if you want to go riding sometime.
