    XR200R stroker engine a PITFA

So my friend bought an 1983 XR200R last week in absolutely incredible condition and stole it for $500. Has a 2188CC stroker kit in it, and it's a huge fricken pain to kickstart, and he wound up stripping one or two teeth on the kicker gears.

It has a compression release lever up top, but no cable. I'm wondering where I can get a nice picture showing how to hook up the cable, and if I went through all of that effort, would it allow for easier kick starts? Or should I just forget about kicking it over and bump it? Bump starts right up.

And yes, I'm buying it off of him. Here's a pic for you guys so you can drool over it

also, how hard would it be to replace the kicker gears?

I believe the compression release only works on the stock xr cam . It rode on the back side of the stock cam lobe .

It is kind of a PITA to do kicker gears, it is internal on those. I am building an 84 XR200R now, but as a flattracker. I had an 83 like that, but was lowered, bored, and had a cam. If you have any ?s on building it up PM me.
Also, I thought it had the integrated comp release on the kicker with a cable going to the head. My 83 had that.
I cant believe the gear stripped though, my TT500, that has to have the decomp, I kick without and end up breaking the kick return PLATE! Almost 220 lbs of comp on that.

Are you gonna get up and burn an X in your head?

wow looks like its in pretty good shape. there has to be a way to get the comp release to work. That would suck if you had to bump start it everytime. unfourtunately im no much help when it comes to those old xr motors as i have very little experience with them

You're going to have to start it like a YZ400F. Bump the motor over till you feel it reach TDCC. Pull up manually on the decomp lever (since your cable is missing) and bump the motor ever so slightly past TDC. Now brace yourself and kick that thing like your trying to stomp that kicker right off!

Pretty much. I am glad I sold my TT. Put a decomp on it, and starts in 1 kick, albeit a nasty kick.

even more bored 50 over 02 xr is hard to kick...it never had the decompression cable attached when i got it. when these motors get built they run good but you do have a risk of damaging kicker stuff.

Thank god the 86/87 don't ever seem to slip and never strip.

Good, because i'll trade you a stock XR200R engine for it

The bike now belongs to me

But again with the kickstarter- seems like it's nice and stripped now, and it clicks while riding, so I'm thinking something is in the way. Bumped right up, even with it being a chili 60*F outside this morning.

If anyone has a good running XR200R engine that they want to trade for something with more balls, then shoot me a pm. This engine is a big pain on the trails, and if i ever get it plated, it's going to be a nightmare if it stalls.

    Who built the motor..what parts?

    I miss my stroker
My 200x stroker was fine..never stripped the gears or shaft or anything..12:1 compression..all Powroll parts.

I wish I had a stock xr200 motor to trade you
I'll give you a stock 200x motor haha i wish.

told ya these lil motors dont take well to the bigbore kits.. my stock motor .20 over is hard to kick over, harder then a 250 2 stroke. i dont have any decompression cable set up, but if you'd get that it would be easy then.

lol 2 strokes are easy to start. 4 chokers are hard to kick, especially a high-compression motor.

2 and 4 strokes are equally easy to kick over. It's the HIGH compression that are a pain to kick over.....
