My home built Big Red plow... Lots of pics...

I have gotten quite a few request on the plow I built for my BR, so I decided to write it up out in the open for all to see... I started out with a CL score of a 46" wide plow from a garden tractor. I believe I paid 40 bucks for it, and it had the swivel. Laid it out in fron of the BR, and found it to fit just right... I used 1.5" square tubing (3/16th" wall thickness) for my frame work. --Picture 3 is the basic frame work of the plow. --Pic 4 was the first part I built. Its the cross bar that is underneath my engine, both of the dog ears drop in behind the pegs, using the peg bolts. (has gone an entire winter of plowing alot of driveways without any issues) This bar is 28" wide and has a 3/4" coupling nuts welded into each end. (welded around the end, and then plug welds through the tube on all 4 sides for extra security)
--Pic 5 and 6 are the right side of this bar. Notice that there is a notch in the tube for rear brake lever clearance.
--Picture seven is primarily the shape of the mounting tab on the left side peg mount. (nut welded in...)
--Picture 8 is a 3/4 inch bolt with a shoulder that measure just a tiny bit over 1.5". So this conveniently bottoms out in the ends of this under bar and makes for a good beefy pivot point.

Please excuse the rust... I must have forgotten to wash all the MN salt off before I packed it away for the summer. DOH!!
I used Duplicolor Bedliner in the rattler for paint, and neglected to scuff down the metal, so its flaking off like dandruff...

Here the pic shows the pivot point, and the overall peremiter design of the frame. From the end of the pivot point, to the front edge of the pivot point bar, is 40" even. (if I were to do this over, I would have made this length more like 41.5" long) The angles cut into the 1.5" square tubes are 35 degrees each, making the total angle of each side 70 degrees from straight. I have been using a Superwinch 2000 lbs winch to power the plow up and down. The downside to this is when the plow is up in the air, you are fighting the winch cable a bit, but I dont find it to be bad... When the plow is on the ground, it steers normal... (for a trike!) Its late here, (well late enough that my kids are in bed, so I am not going to pull the BR out and mount it up tonight, but will take a few more pics of it going into place, and get them posted as well... f anyone has more specific questions, just ask, and I will answer them the best I can... Total investment, 85 bucks for the winch, 40 for the plow and 15 bucks into metal and hardware... $140.00 total for a fun way to move snow!

I was laid off at the time from my fabrication job. If I was to do it over, I would have made it out of round tubing on the hydro bender, but didnt have money, or axcess to one at the time...

    Man, that is beautiful.

I wonder if there's a way to make/use a drag blade, like the way a farm tractor works.

If you ran the blade at an angle so it would 'self-unload' or I wonder if it would just make the rear end drift sideways and just do artistic doughnuts.

I've got a bunch of dirt coming from a new bus station in town and I guess we'll pull out anything we have that runs to try and level and grade it all.

Thinking I could start with a heavy old pickuptruck bumper.

    hmmmm

    Thanks for the inspiration.

Looks great. I've been thinking of building a plow for my 250es since I got it. Just gotta find a decently priced plow with the pivot assembly. My neighbors think I'm crazy as it is. But if they saw me on the lake plowing the ice skating rink on my Big Red they'd really think I got some good stuff.

Thanks for the pics of your set-up. I know there's been some interest in seeing it.

Thanks guys... I love the look I get in the neigborhood pushing the blade around with my BR... I am just wrapping up my new front rack/winch plate for the front end. Was getting a little hard on my nice original rack, so I cut up a POS rack and did a little reinforcing! Will get a pic or two up once I get it finished...

Interested to see front winch mount???? My arm gets a litttle tired on my 200 when I plow.....I have used springs to assist but they take a bit to much pressure off. Let me know what type of rollers, winch etc... you use. My neighbors always slow down when big red is blasting the snow as well...... lol Trailpros and all!!

With the blade down it steers really easy...

With the blade angled, it doesnt drift the rear around....

Heres the "beefed" up rack... May install a few speed holes to take down some of the bulky look... (yes those are foot prints, I was standing on it...)
