ATF as 2 stroke tranny oil

I have heard of a lot of people using this for the tranny oil in 2 strokes. Does anyone on here use it. I am going to change the oil in my YT175 and I have heard that ATF is better than regular oil for the trannys on 2 stokes. If its better I want to use it. Seems like it might be good in the winter since when its really cold it should be easier to pull the starter rope with lighter oil in the gear box.

What type of ATF do you run? There was some debate on another forum between Type F and Dextron/Mercron? Just want to make sure I use the right stuff.

Would you want to change it more often than regular motor oil, or just the same? What is the advantage to ATF?

While type F may be the better choice due to less friction modifiers, merc-dex works fine too.. I had 2 cases of the stuff and I used it all with no issues.... And Yes change it very often. like every other ride. Thats the main bonus IMO.. affordable frequent flushes.. since there is no filter an oil change is the only way to get the crud out... Plus the clutch action is fantastic, and shifting is improved in most cases. I've tore down many engines that ran atf for long periods and they showed no abnormal wear.. but none were extreme hp machines

My YT175 certainly isn't an extreme hp machine. I read somewhere Merc-Dex was bad for the clutch discs?

Yeah I have heard of it before. First time I saw it I was helping a friend with an old Kawasaki dirt bike and I thought someone had made a mistake but then I looked online and it seems like a lot of people are using it.

I use BelRay gear saver and it looks and smells like ATF, lol. Some of the old racers used corn/vegetable oil-'SHAKE-N-BAKE!'.

Does regular motor oil last longer? The my trike is a totally stock YT175, so changing it after every ride seems kind of excessive. It doesn't get near the stress and force of a racer or duner. Lots of times I am just putting through the woods with the occasional hill climb.
