Racing the Mexican 1000 on 3wheels!
The Mexican 1000 was the predecessor to the modern day Baja 1000 put on by SCORE. Last year NORBA brought back the Mexican 1000 for vintage vehicles including 3wheelers. Growing up on the east coast, I read about trikes racing in Mexico in 3Wheeler mag, 3 Wheel Action and ATV News. I thought it was insane to race a 3wheeler for 1000 miles but given the opportunity, I would do it in a heartbeat. The west coast racing scene was as very alien to me as I was a woods racer and I had to settle for racing the Black Water 100 in West Virgina. I still wondered what it would be like to race for 1000 miles in a foreign country? I got the opportunity to do just that after moving to San Diego. Now on quads, I was offered a ride in 93 with Doug and Mike Roll. We won the Baja 500, Baja 1000 and the SCORE championship. I was hooked and continued to race in Baja while running the Temecula Motorsports race team for many years. I still thought about what it would be like to race it on 3 wheels? Temecula Motorsports was sold a few years ago and without a sponsor, I was forced into retirement (and I'm only 49). When I heard that NORBA had a 3wheeler class, I got excited but without a sponsor and in this economy, I couldn't figure out how to pull it off on my own. I do own about 10 vintage 3wheelers including my trusty 85 250r but always wanting more suspension and motor, I am in the middle of building an XR650R conversion and a TPC450R. I figured that when I get one of these going, I would find a way to do the race. About 3 months ago I was contacted by the owner of TPC Trikes, Bill Casey to work together to race the Mexican 1000 in 2011 on a TPC. I was mega stoked! The TPC is one bad ass trike and definitely can handle 1000 miles. Bill would build a new trike and I would handle the Mexican logistics for the race. We've been working on things daily ever since. I wanted to start this thread for anyone interested in following the preparation and what goes down during the actual race. We would enlist the help of both of our sponsors and some new ones too. I'll post regular updates including equipment used, team sponsors, pre-run adventures and race coverage etc.
