'85 Yamaha 225 DR Special Edition??

    Hello everyone,

I'm new here, and I am hoping you guys can help me out.

I grew up riding honda ATCs, so this Yamaha is new to me. I got a hell of a deal on an 85 Yamaha 225 DR and an 86 Honda 125 yesterday. I did a quite a bit of research last night, and I read on several different forums that the Yamaha is a rare find.

The Yamaha has only had two owners, and has been kept in a climate controlled environment for most of its life. I had a self proclaimed 3 wheeler expert (he actually does know a lot, I validated some of his claims on the internet) take a look last night and he said everything is original with the exception of the tires. He said it even has the original battery.

If any of you guys know something about the Yamaha, let me know. Any information is appreciated. I'm trying to decide if I am going to do a full restoration.

    That Tri Moto is nice!!!!!

That was somebody else on the board....I think he sent me pics of it years ago.....I know he is a Tecate Guy.

I would just put an after market Cobra exhaust and some Dura-Blue Wheel spacers on it and be done with it......maybe some better handle bars.....

    Please post some better pics?!?!?!?!

I thought the 86 125m was more rare than the DR.

Thanks edog, where do I find cool stuff to spend my money on? I see a lot of people on this site reference Dennis Kirk. I was checking out the pics of your bike last night, nicely done.

Thanks for the link to the manual, MonroeMike. That will certainly come in handy.

Fabiodriven, you could be right! I don’t know anything about this bike to tell you the truth. Well, I do know that I can ride a wheelie on it. I had to show my wife just how dangerous it could be, in the hands of a redneck all hopped up on Mt. Dew, when I took it off the trailer yesterday.

My wife had a few choice words about the new projects last night just before she went to bed early, without me. Oh well, I can get another wife. I need another project like I need a hole in the head, but what the hell? My truck needs paint and my Honda bobber only needs a piston to be complete, so taking on another project, or two, seems like a really good idea.

The kids are already wearing me out about getting the 125 ready to ride, so I’ll probably tackle it when I return from Australia in a few weeks. It needs tires, brakes, pull cord, etc.

In addition to being a mechanic/welder/engineer (or redneck to the layperson), I’m also an amateur photographer and semi-professional pig wrestler. Enjoy the pics.

Those back rims are offset, if you turn them around, you'll gain a little width.

    There's another manual here.

Hey, thanks again everyone. I did a few searches and found the wheel spacers, exhaust, and brakes. I'll probably throw a new set of tires on, as well.

    Where can I get handlebars?

Still learning... so it is an 86? I thought I read that somewhere, but the guy I got it from swore it was an 85.

I washed it up this afternoon and cleaned the little bit of grease off that was on the engine. I'm looking forward to restoring it; though, it won't take much I think it will be enjoyable.
