    87 125m

I know off a 87 125m that I can buy, its been 1 owner from new and has been in storage for the best part of 12 years or more. There are a few small things missing like the tool box lid, the glass section of the headlight, tail light, and will need new decals.

Question is, how hard are parts to get for this model? I have been doing some quick searches on the net and there doesnt seems to be a whole lot of info on these or photos??

The 87 125's are the hardest machine to find any parts for IMO.
They don't make plastics.... or anything really. But, they are the coolest looking machine they ever made in my opinion!

I would pick it up if the price and condition are right. fenders are IMPOSSIBLE to find, so make sure they are good.

If it is a good deal buy it. They have reverse and electric start if I am not mistaken. They are fun little machines.

    Hi Jason,

Many thanks for the info, I was afraid someone would say that lol
On a positive note though the fenders are fine, no cracks or poor repairs at all, seat is also original and not ripped; I think I may have already found a NOS Headlight which is good news too.

Yeah it has reverse like the 250ES up at the handle and electric start and now you have reminded me, it needs a new key and lock set.

Well I didnt get a chance yet to look at the 125m I mentioned in this thread, but another one came up and doesnt seem to need very much. Rear toolbox lid missing, no damaged plastics and rear brakes need serviced, they work ok but could be allot better. This one also has the factory rear carrier installed.

how rare are the 86 and 87 125's. I see 85s all the time, but not 86/87. Performance wise how do they compare to the 85 125m and the 110's.......They are a different motor right?

Anyone ever compare the kawasaki klt110 to the honda 110/125m....seems the kawasaki is way faster. Just wondering if the 86 and 87 honda was as quick as the klt's???

    Found this little write up:

With production numbers of 3 wheelers significantly down for 1986, Honda completely redesigned the ATC125M for this year. (NOTE: in 1986 the ATC200X was also completely redesigned as well. These are the last two retooling jobs Honda would ever make for the ATC line-up). The major design for change for the 1986 ATC125M was so encompassing that this model looks nothing like the 1985 and prior years. Main changes to the model are as follows: Motor cylinder went from old horizontal style to vertical style, reverse gear added to transmission, structural round tube frame rather than the old pressed out skinny style frame that dated back to the 1970 US90, all new fenders, tank and seat design. The 1986 ATC 125M really is a stunning little 3 wheeler that was more modern looking than most any other model. Still, Honda did not include front or rear suspension to the model which makes for a bouncy ride.

With just over 8,500 of these units ever made (and not all of those came to US soil) this is most likely the rarest trike in our collection as well. We do ride this 3 wheeler - but we are always sure to be very careful as parts for this are so very hard to find - in the case of damage to existing parts. If you have never seen one of these before, then you will know by looking at it just how much different and special it is from the rest of our collection.

Having owed all the above machines at one time or another ( over 22 years ), I would say the 86-87 125m's are way better than older 110 & 125m's and the Kaw110. The older 110's and 125m's have laydown motors, while both the Kaw110 and the 86-87 125m's have uprite motors. IMO, the Uprite motors seem to run better and stronger. I never done a side by side challenge, but I would say the 86-87 125m would leave the Kaw 110's eating dust ( running both stock ).
Currently have a 86 125'm that is in nice shape ( thinking of selling it though ). I find the 86-87's seem to have a lot less problems than the older models ( Kaw 110's have some tranny issues ).
The 86-87 125m's have plenty of power for the machine ( but some will say never enough power. lol ). I do know the 86-87 125m's motors are the same as the 87-88 trx125, and the heads are simular to 185-200 motors. A easier power boost for the 86-87 125m's is doing a head / cam swap. You can put a 83-85 200x head and cam ( gotta modify the cam just a little ) on the 125 motor. I done this on 86-87 125m / 87-88 trx125 style motor ( in our 88 trx125 "the wrecker" ) and I found there was a noticable power difference. The added power would allow to step up the sprockets ( if they can be found ) to attain more top end speed. An added bonus to the 86-87 125m's is they have reverse.

The 86-87 125m's are harder to find ( 87's are the hardest to find ). The bad part is: harder to find machines = even harder to find parts.

Might be more info than you were looking for, but just giving my thoughts and a little knowledge on them.

Thanks for the info. I would like to see a klt 110 run side by side with an 86/87 125. Just from riding the 110 and 85' 125, the kawasaki seems to have alot more power, if your on it the front wheel raises up and stays up in second in a normal riding position. The clutch also seems to bite alot harded on the klt. I think all my wheelers are stock. I don't really feel a difference in the 110 and 125 honda power wise, but my buddy who is also into 3 wheelers thought the 125 had more? Too bad the manufacturers never had the hp ratings for these, atleast not that I've been able to find.
