New guy with a big red!

hey guys i just got me a 86 250es big red and im looking forword to getting it running and restoring it!
my first question is where can i get parts for this thing? it runs right now but i have to jump the selinoid because the keys got lost.
i got it of my brother and its gonna need work done the wireing is all cluster!@#$^%d it smissing some stuff and the gear shifter spins on the shaft i was thinking a spot weld could fix that because the bolt wont tighten anymore.

right now im missing a front break lever assembly and a battery so im having to use jumper cables to crank it. but i only got 50$in it

    congrats.
One of my favorite all round machines.

    Look up
    floating big red
    and
    big red with silverbacks
    on youtube to get motivated.

Just unplug the 4 wires to the ig switch.
or get the number off the switch and get a key from honda or online for 5 bucks
but you really don't need it.
The kill switch will work for you.

    Kick start it.

    As far as the shifter?
    do NOT make it worse.
We all hope that the shaft is harder than the shift lever but it's a fine line.
Some people either hacksaw or grind somehow, the space in the shifter
so it can pinch tighter but I can't imagine how.

    What else?

yupp, have fun, don't put your feet down while rolling,
check / change the rear axle gear oil 3...THREE ounces only
    and it needs every drop.

and it does have an actual oil filter element that can be put in wrong
    so be veryvery careful.

surely there will be more advice after the football game.

I get mine going minimally to make sure it all shifts and
no KnOcKs and THEN spend time getting them less ugly.

    or not.

Mud always makes them look better anyway.

if you PROMise you're not stealing it.....
all 4 ignition switch wires can dangle in free air and connect to nothing or each other.

That's the way my favorite one is.

After going blind studying the wire diagrams......
the ig sw feeds the lights from the battery and neutral safety switch
and neutral light and reverse and starter among other things.

so don't cut any wires, they just unplug. which takes a whole bunch of stuff
out of the equation for starting.

Key on, or disconnected, kill switch in the middle position,
push the kickstarter until you feel resistance and then snap it.

If you have spark, it will fire with VERY little starting fluid,
or if you're lucky, gas fed thru the carb.

If it does fire and run for a second, you're more than 1/2 way there.

    Keep us posted
    but check your oils first.

No lol I'm not stealing it I traded my brother a single shot shotgun for it.
I got it running last night and rode it my biggest problem is the shifter. I put a small tack weld on it to hold it just while I was playing with it last night I got it running and made a few trips down my road and back and it runs great. My next problem is how I'm gonna start it. Is there a simplifie the wiring harness and just put a keyeed ignition to start it instead of using the start button? I really wanna Make this a simple basic no bs rider for trails and stuff later on Incan wire in a head light and stuff.

My problem is I don't know what goes where as far as wires. It runs great I just need to get a reliable way to start it. The kick starter takes forever to catch.

There is a wiring diagram link on the front page. Look under Honda wiring diagrams. Welcome to the club.

well i think i got the shifter sorted out. fisrt i took it off and ground down where it clamps together by running my chop saw through the middle. Then i reamed out the bolt hole with a drill press. then i used a triangle file and fallowed the exsisting pattern to put some new grooves in the shift arm the shaft still had decent grooves on it. after all that i installed it with a longer 10mm bolt and secured it with a lock washer and nut on the bottom and tightened the hell out of it! Seems to work fine so far so but the real test is when i fire it up and ride it again. cant right now im at work lol. luckily im a maintenace guy at the 3rd largest casino in the world so i have access to just about any tool i need.
