First real dirtbike was a '75 Husqvarna 400.

You wanna talk about a change? I didn't ride that XL very much before I sold it, and went straight to the Husqvarna. Me not having much experience with bikes jumping on this TINY(about as small as a modern 80, but alot shorter) 400cc two stroke. I felt like I was riding a rocket that had murder in it's heart.
I hear ya there, I had the DT175 for a short time and then the old man bought a Can-AM Qualifier 400 2-stroke left side kick, he told me and my best friend, dont ride it, then he got to the point were he said, "If you can start it, you can ride it" Bought broke my leg the first day but I got it running and that was the end of it. Stupid Fast, and your quote sums it up very well: "I felt like I was riding a rocket that had murder in it's heart"

My Dad had a 73'Honda 100 that he rode to work, that was my learning experience. My first bike was a 72' Ossa Pioneer, that was new to me in 74'. Quickly I found the limits of the Spanish motor, handling & fiberglass. I swear all you had to do was think about landing from a jump & the fenders would crack. My Dad quickly helped me to secure an RM 250A in order to preserve the "SLOWSSA".

My first three wheeler was a 1983 185s that I got from a farm next to my granparents farm. Poor thing was in bad shape, front fender broken off, rear axle was frozen up, gas tank was rusted out bad, no seat and of corse broken pull start, but ran great after a little cleanup. If ebay was around back then I might still have that one but finding parts wasn't so easy for me so it was quite the frankenstein.

My first trike was an old 110. I dont remember the year. First bike was a Kawasaki trail bike with the little bitty tires about 4" wide. It was a turd, but I had alot of fun on it.

Wow great thread idea, brings back forgotten memories....

in 1974, I was 10, my Granpa gave me what was probably a 20 year old cast iron Briggs and Stratton engine. I found a beat up belt drive mini bike frame/tires and wheels that I gave 5 bucks for. I put the motor on and connected it with a coolor pully and alternator belt. Rigged a throttle with a bycycle grip, duct tape and a bycicle brake cable. I had to push start it as there was not clutch, or brakes. I would ride it till it got so hot it would quit, let it cool down and then go again. I took that old motor apart about once a week and it always ran when I put it back together. The front tire threw the tread off down to the cords so I just wrapped it in duct tape, never went flat.

I think the fact that my Dad and Grandpa let me loose on that thing shaped my whole life. Guess that's why I am on this forum now. I just picked up an 81 ATC70 as a project for my 10 year old grandson. Now I am going to turn him loose on it!

    Good times!

My first bike was an early 80s kawasaki KD80. I've been a die-hard banshee guy for the last decade though. Just changed gears and picked up an 85 R last weekend!
