Removing 250r axle?

Is there any better way to remove this stubborn axle than beating it with a dead blow? I've been hitting it and hitting it with no results. You are supposed to hit it from the left side to the right correct? (vantage point of behind the trike facing the axle). How about heating the bearing carrier with a torch or something? I wouldn't even mind just buying another siwngarm and axle just so I can ride my toy again

Is this that 84 aircooled 250r you had at the hairscramble? Sometimes when the rear bearings get that wrecked they bind up the axle. I typically have luck using a sledge and a 4x4 block of wood. Now listen it sounds crazy and destructive but it you take your time and do it right its effective without damaging anything.

First off you need to make sure the trike is held firmly, banging on the axle without the bike being held solid isn't going to do much. Getting a friend to assist can help sometimes, you'd got to get the bike held solid.

Next take the hub off the side you're going to be banging on. Looking at the service manual it does look like your axle should come out from the right hand side of the machine (facing the rear). This means you'll want to drive it out from the left.

Put the axle nut back on after removing the hub, screw it down just so the nut face is flush with the tip of the axle, we're trying to create as much driving surface as we can.

Now with you buddy holding the machine steady, hold the 4x4 block of wood (a foot or two long is good to keep your hands away from the striking zone) against the axle end/nut and use your other hand to swing the sledge and strike the block of wood. You should be able to get some forcefull blows on the axle without risk of damaging it. Watch you block of wood, if it starts to split, get a new block of wood. Use a 4x4, its the safest bet. If your bearings are that trashed (as I remember them anyway) you'll probably need some force.

If you don't have any luck that way then the next thing your going to have to do is remove the swingarm from the bike and take it axle and all to someone with a heavy duty press.

This is the air fooler that I had at the Hare Scramble and unfortunately the bearings are very trashed. I only had it tied down once but it was a pain in the ass to get it tied down so I have just been hitting it harder hoping to compensate it I'll give it a shot this weekend. I have much to do and so little time.
