86' honda atc 250es big red No spark

    Hey guys,

Im new to this website, but i figured it would be a great place to get advice.
I just bought a 1986 honda atc 250 es big red. Only paid a hundred bucks so what could go wrong. I hooked up the battery, turned the key on and it turned over with the electric start. The bike wouldnt start and the neutral light isnt on. I swapped out the cdi with a different cdi box and the neutral light came on but still no spark. I was reading some of the forums and it was saying it may be:
    1) Coil
    2) Pulse generator
    3) Stator
    4) Cdi
    5) Neutral Safety Switch
I have a manual coming from honda to get the ohm readings for the coil, stator, and pulse generator. Well what do u guys think any advice????

I would start checking voltages. See what you have for voltage from the stator, it will be an AC voltage, then check the input and output of the pulse generator, should see voltage on the input and pulses on the output, an old school test light works best for seeing the pulses on the output.

Check for input and output of the CDI, output can be checked at the wire on the coil. You said no spark so i assume you pulled the plug and checked it while turning it over. Check your plug wire ends, cut a bit off and reattach to the coil and plug cap to get clean connections if they look corroded. Try a new spark plug?

The 250ES manual isn't there, i don't have it either, but some of the other 250's are wired the same and gives you the same troubleshooting info. Check my signature link below for the manuals.

The stator ohm readings on that machine should be .2 to .8. The single red and black wire just bellow the cdi is wear you test at the trigger coil i cant rember the ohm readings but take a dial style multi meter and see if it produces a voltage it will be very slight and the wire is blue and black. And the cdi make sure its the same one the plugs may be the same but they might be different.

Hey guys, along these lines... I'm working on my 1986 Big Red 250 and the start switch was bad. Having a junk 1988 fourtrax I I took the start, light/ hi-lo/ switch off and put it on Big Red. Had an extra wire but figured I could make it work. Well... everything worked except didn't have a spark (important part I know). I assume that it's the extra wire that's suppose to go to the engine stop switch, but I don't know what to do. The things I've tried have blown the 15 amp fuse. I'm not opposed to straight-wiring the engine stop switch but I'm not sure how to do that because I believe the switch is closed to stop... any help?

I have a 1986 250es big red that lost spark while riding. I already checked connections and switches and still no spark. My friend. Who works on big reds believes it would be the coil. Can someone please tell me how to check/test the coil, stator, cdi.

All of the tests above require a multi-meter set to read resistance (2000 setting generally works fine). The service manual images explain where to take the readings, positive/negative does not matter when looking at resistance.
