I've witnessed baking soda do an amazing job at restoring aluminum engine parts without disturbing the patina. Just buy a box of arm and , stick a tube in it, fasten the tube to your airgun attachment and you have a homemade soda blaster. Plus it's enviro friendly.

You can use any kind of air gun...most compressors come with some sort of attachment:

Some of the results with soda. This was a KX250 restoration I was watching where the guy said:

I found a good way to get a nice finish on parts like the brake calipers, etc. First, I clean and degrease them chemically (simple green, mineral spirits, brake clean) only using nylon bristle brushes. You can use a wire brush but only on bad areas. Dry, then soda blast. This leaves a more flat but bright tone to the surface. So I lightly go over the part with a new/clean wire brush (toothbrush size) and that gives it a small amount of sheen and deepens the color a little. Looks close to factory, I think.

    Sorry for the hi-jack Shortline.

Looks even better finished! That thing belongs on display, yet it's a rider, my kind of machine!
