185s Carb Question

My 83 185s bogs when I'm sitting at idle and stab the throttle all the way. If I ease into the throttle when taking off it does good, no bogging. When I stab the throttle it bogs bad enough that if I don't let off the bike dies. But yet, if I ease into it, it does fine, and it does not sputter or bog at WOT. Is this rich or lean? Or is it something totally different?

Did it always have this problem?

If not did you change something to cause it ie camshaft, carb etc?

Is your pipe stock?

Is your carb orig?

Do you need full half or no choke to start it?

Off hand it sounds like big cam or oversize carb syndrome.

If the cam and carb are stock I would install a main jet 2 sizes bigger and try that. Jet appropriately from there.

If it is rich it will sputter, burble etc.

Put a new white plug in it and see what color it turns after 30 minutes. dark or black is rich, white is lean.

This has been a problem. All parts are stock. But exhaust is loose at head ( one stud broke off ). Oh and most of the time if the bike is cold ( awhile since its been run ) I have to full choke it. And sometimes give it gas.

Now that you mention it, what is a 'plug chop'?
something about holding it at a specific throttle position and then shutting it off?
and then read the plug color?
Maybe just for 2 strokes?

I wonder if Zach's trike runns better, as in not stumble, with partial choke on?
Sounds like it may idle ok till he hits the throttle but not real clear.

Oh it idles great and runs great through the whole rpm range. Except for off idle throttle stabs. Then bogs real bad. Does that help?

Tri again has an xlnt suggestion i overlooked try it with 1/2 choke and let us know what happens.

The fact that it starts with little or no choke suggests that the idle jet is slightly large [rich] but that's ok, your other problem still suggests what i previously mentioned.

try choke and drive test.

install bigger mains.

Time for someone to disassemble and clean the carb. Sounds like the issue is in the main jet passage. These bikes do not come standard with an accelerator pump and as a result can be a little picky when it comes to WOT just off idle. Also, with reduced back pressure in the exhaust from the leaking at the broken stud, you are adding to the issue. Clean the carb (pull it all apart and soak it in Berrymans or like solution), replace the internal O-rings, fix the exhaust stud, and you'll be golden. Also... when was the last time you set the valves? Good Luck.

Take a look at the side of the carb where the seam for the float bowl is, I forget which side. It will say PD on the carb body and should be stamped with letters and numbers starting with 85A. If it is something different, tell us what it is.

When you have the carb apart check the numbers stamped near the top of the main and slow jet. If you are over 50 years old, you will probably need reading glasses for that.

I have had great luck matching my engine numbers to the correct carb model and settings after a thorough cleaning. I have yet to buy a rebuild kit or even a replacement part.

Make sure your engine is a 83 185S:

mine did the same thing after i cleaned the carb., turns out i had the pilot screw 2.5 turns out instead of the 2 it should have been. might be something to check. none of my header bolts wear broken, but it did not have a crush gasket in it either. i got a lot of backfire from it when it idled down.

Hey guys sorry for the late reply I've been workin late, lately. But I did have time to go check the choke positions. Have to put on full choke to start when motor is cold, once motor warms up no need for choke to start. Of course it sputters and pops if in full choke after motor warms up and you drive it. While motor is warmed up and on no choke it does like stated above bogs on off idle stabs, but does fine if you ease in to it and doesn't sputter at wot. Now, when I put it on half choke it still sputters a little at high rpms, but the bogging at off idle stabs goes away and it revs perfectly. What does that mean I need to do besides overhaul it?
