    Another 70 Comes Home

1982 ATC 70 with the usual scars. Got it running with fresh gas, has no power so a carb and points adjust/clean is in order. Usual bent frame, needs heel guards and chain case cover. It has an oil leak by the shifter that I hope isn't a cracked case. Tires, rear plastics and seat are nice and it even has a spark plug tool.

    Nice!

Hopefully the leak is just the shifter shaft seal, been there done that, not terrible to replace but it does take some work. Fenders and seat sure are nice on it. I always wondered why Honda didn't extend the frame to the front at least another inch to keep the motor from rubbing into the front fender though.

They don't rub unless you hit something with the front end.

Ya. I think the fender hitting the motor is from the bent frame he mentioned. =)

Nice little 70. I've had 13 of them over the last 4 years, 11 of them had bent frames. It's an easy enough fix, but nice to be able to use that to get a better price.

My daughter and I took the 73' ATC 70 and "Ladybug" out for a stroll today. My wife caught us leaving and gave us poo poo about taking her trike. She asked why we didn't use the one I bought recently. I told her it isn't ready yet. We went for an hour got caught in the rain and came back. It was 2:00 and I decided to tackle the 82 before supper. I straightened the frame, cleaned the carb, adjusted points, oil change, air filter clean and serviced the chain; all before 5:00. So what do I do....call my daughter and say it's ride time again. That machine runs nice I must say. Went out for an hour with the 73 again. Fun times for sure.

How involved is straightening the frame? How hard is it? I'm looking at an ATC70 myself, and the front fender is almost touching the engine....looks like there are some small burn marks on the fender too.

It's actually fairly simple krz. Remove the seat, tank, coil, intake, carb and brake cable (just to be on the safe side) and stand it on its end. Place a piece of wood in the space between the engine and frame and use a bottle jack to straighten. My three ton is working pretty hard. You may have to "over straighten" slightly to compensate for the spring back in the metal. The pics are from a completely disassemble machine, but you only have to remove what I mentioned earlier.

I know - resurrecting an old thread - but thanks, coolpool. That is brilliant. Great explanation along with detailed pics.

P.S. Coolpool - I love your ATC70 fleet. The 2 gems tucked in the garage look nice too.

If I ever make it up to Cold Lake - would love to see them in person. The beer is on me.

    Thanks again, buddy.

Anytime bkvette! I'm supposed to pick up another "non-runner" 70 (read points adjustment), this April that is supposed to be mint. If you make the 5 hour trek, the beer is on ME! I may get your way for a car show this summer; who knows?

I can't seem to be able to find a 70 that isn't priced crazy. I had one and sold it. No wonder the wife questions my judgement.
