Looks like you can get a new one for $40 on ebay:

You didn't mention what year but I just did my CDI last week on my 84. You should switch to a 5 pin. It'll only cost you about 10 bucks total and instead of paying 50 bucks for old a 30 year old part that may also be bad, just swap to a new one. Only hang up is that it's a different connector but that's covered in the first link below.

Here is the thread on what to get and where.

    The 84 200es is a completely different animal than a 250es ( 85-87 ). Completely different CDI set up.

Yep the 85 250ES is a different animal when it comes to the CDI. It has the same round connector on the 85 that the 84 200ES does, BUT the 85 250ES does not have a mechanical advance. Its an electrical advance in the CDI unit itself.

You can buy aftermarket 5 pin CDI units WITH advance, but you have to get the right one. Mainly it has to be an AC powered unit With Advance.

The 86-87 250 have a 4+2 connector type CDI, again with electrical advance.

You CAN use the 86-87 CDI on the 85, i have done it and i know it works! All you need to do is change out the round connector for the 4+2 connectors and your set.

Then you need the connector kit, i just bought this pigtail set.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-4-way-Wate...cb1429&vxp=mtr

What i did was unwrap the harness a bit to leave a couple inches of wire on the stock plug and then cut the wires, leaving a pigtail on the original plug in case it was ever needed again. Then i just soldered on the new pigtails and sealed up the connections with heatshrink tubing, the kind with hot melt glue inside them to waterproof them. Then i just re-wrapped the harness to make it neat and plugged in the new CDI. Fired up first shot.

Its a worthy upgrade, don't think of it as butchering.... The round plug CDI's are not aftermarket produced that i know of, there is some old stock units out there, but why buy a 20+ year old electronic component when you can get a brand new one and have a lifetime supply with the new connector style?

Thats why i call it an "upgrade".

Hooking up the new style 4/2 connector CDI

When wiring the new CDI to the new 4/2 connector from the old 6pin round style, did you wire it according to the wiring diagram listed in the clymer manual for the 1986-1987 250es
because the wire colors are all the same but with the new connector some wires are switched but only because of the different style of connector right?
