A few months I bought an 18W bar (6 LEDs) to fool around with in the garage.
I always assumed the AC system on the ATCs would not run these lights but, after seeing X-Owner's rig in OK and the massive Cyclops bar on Gary's 600X, I tried out my 18W light on the 350X and the TRX70.
Both run the light with no problem.
I plugged it into the tail light connector on both the 350X and the TRX had neither had any problem running the light even with the headlight on.
The TRX uses a stock TRX70 lighting coil but I added generic, 2 wire, 12V "dirt bike" regulator when I wired up the lights. It has a 55W halogen work light for a headlight and an LED marker light for a tail light.
The 350X lighting system is completely stock.
So, I bought a 27W round light for the TRX and a 14", 72W 14" light bar to run on my Tecate when it goes back together. I might get another 72W bar to add to the 350X. Looks like there's a good spot under the stock headlights.
All lights still in the mail but I should have some mounting and results in the next week or so.
The 350X runs the 72W bar and the TRX runs the 27W light - I just plugged them into the tail light until I make some tabs/brackets.
I received my lights and got the front ones mounted. I'm waiting for the mounting brackets to arrive for the rear. They will be on a separate switch. I be all lit up and stuff!!!!!!!!
Jim - it's hard to tell from the pics - how are you mounting those? I'm not too proud to copy ideas...
Here you go Jon. I scoured Ebay for a clamp type light mount and found these. The clamp is hinged so I didn't have to take my front end apart to install the mounts. The clamps came with a spacer ring which was too small to I tossed the ring and cut a piece of rubber I had and it was perfect. When tightened down, the clamp is nice and firm. These clamps do come in different sizes for the ID.

The rear light are going to be mounted to the grab bar between the bottom of the rack and the top of the grab bar... I hope. The clamps I found for the rear swivel 360deg at the mounting head. I hope they show up today.

Not enough days left before Rampage. I'm on an LED bender.
So what I'm gathering from some of this is I can run this on my 84 200x by putting in a regulator or just simply running it off the light or through the tail light?

On the 83-85 200X its not that simple. The 200X uses the main harness wiring and the front and rear bulb filaments to regulate the power from the lighting coil. The 200X has a lighting coil that puts out 68w watts at 5000 rpm. The headlight is a 60/60 and the tail light is 5 watts meaning the load on the lighting coil is 65 watts anytime the lights are on leaving only 3 watts left in the power budget. If you exceed the power budget, you run the risk of burning out your lighting coil. If you were to replace your headlight with an LED light say an 18 watt light then that would drive up the voltage on the lighting circuit. The 185/200 series engines that are not electric start are not very friendly when it comes to adding or subtracting lights on that circuit. To work right and keep within the operating current, you need to keep your light load at about 65 watts. Now with that said, some LED light assemblies have a working voltage of 12-36 volts so you would need to calculate the working voltage with any given LED light installed. It may work, it may not. The output of the lighting coil varies depending on the RPMs and it ranges from about 12.5 VAC to about 50 VAC. This is where the harness and bulb filaments come in. They keep the voltage capped at around 13.6 VAC. If you burn out the headlight bulb lets say, the voltage spikes up usually taking the tail light bulb out. So you see its not a yes or no answer here.
Wow thank you for that details explanation I got some math to do bit say if I throw in a regulator I would still have to match the voltage to be around 65 no matter what I run? Could I run 2 18 watts to bring it up or not I'll have to do the number any ideas

The regulator you typically see on the 250R, 350X, and late model 200Xs is really not a regulator. Its what's called a shunt. Its job is to take any voltage over 13.6VAC and electrically dump it overboard so to speak. You can wire one in and it will keep peak voltage capped. The other component you have to factor in here is amperage. If you take the total wattage and divide it by the working voltage and in this case lets say 13 volts, you get roughly 5 amps of current draw on the lighting coil in the stock configuration (65/13=5). In theory, you can install a regulator and as long as you don't exceed the 5 amp limit, you can run other light configurations.
