    atc70, need creative gas cap

I have just about completed my 73 atc70 project. Get a beautiful paint job and dent repair on the oem fuel tank. Then realize I am not able to get a seal with the gas cap due to the opening being warped. Tried different new caps with new gaskets and still leaks when gas sloshes around.
I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts about using a gas cap that screws on like some of the bikes use. If there was a screw on type that I could get to really tighten down perhaps it would seal?
I am open to any suggestions. I am including pics that can help explain the problem. Some of what you see is liquid steel in an attempt to build up the lip. Failed miserably. I also used a bearing puller to pull out how it is dipped in but not a fix. The lip itself looks like it is worn down.
    Thanks for any help

    Great post, nice pix.
    Wish I had an answer.
Surely one of the rocket scientists will chime in soon.

Not a great idea, but my first thought is some sort of expanding freeze plug.
big fat rubber that is squashed with 2 washers and a wingnut.
Not sure how you'd get it to breathe, however.

or one of those super fat thread screw in plastic caps?

ps - on second thought, if you could find one of those expanding freeze plugs,
one washer inside the tank and a larger one on the outside and then tighten down? without the rubber, of course.
Maybe it will bend the lip up.
    Or??

There has to be a way.

interesting thought and ideas. I used a bearing puller to pull it up and it did but that lip is just kind of warped and not as full lipped so to speak.
Tonight I put in a gas cap from a later model atc70, a 79 or 80 I think. It seems to be better, but I have to give it a solid try. I was on ebay looking at screw on caps for Harleys. I wrote to a seller asking the width and length to see if would have a chance of fitting in the opening.
    I remain in the hunt.

I have a locking cap on one of my 70s.. uses a plastic hex key to seal it.. they were on ebay a while back cheap!
they have a thicker rubber gasket, put it onthe tank, turn it 90 degrees and crank the key till tight..

    just an idea

tblumer - yea, I tried doubling the gasket and just too thick to make it turn. I thought about a second gasket but thin enough to allow the cap to turn as needed to seal.

Mik6- I am very interested in what you said you found and are using. Do you have any pics and or link to seller on ebay?
    Thanks for the ideas

I had the same problem, im guessing from suction over the years it just pulled it in. The only way to fix it is to repair it. All i used was a set of channel locks and needle nose plies to pull the lip up and get it all even and sealing good again. I created a thread not too long ago called "Leaky Gas Cap Woes", maybe thatll help. Your looks to be a little worse, but you never know.

I found your thread. good info there. I can see that your problem looked similar to mine and yes I think mine is worse. I just purchased a new oem gas cap for the 78 to 80 atc70. It seems tighter and if I am careful putting it on it seems to seal ok. Only test has been my shaking the trike back and forth. I need to take it out and see what happen getting the fuel good and sloshed around. I'll keep you posted.

I haven't heard from Mik6 about the cap he described. That sounds like it would be the ticket.

Make a new gasket out of cork. Softer than rubber and it will swell from the moisture. Works on old snowmobiles.

Do you or someone you know do automotive bodywork? If so, welding or brazing on a new opening may be a better deal. I've also seen gas cap installations that use a cap assembly that is held on by multiple fasteners which sort of makes the gas cap look more like a racing car type of deal if that makes sense. May not be much help but just trying to throw out some ideas.

Thanks for the ideas. I have wondered about having a new opening replace the old. I just imagine what it will do to the brand new paint job
I think of that as a last resort if I can't get something else to work out.

I suggest doing what vealmonkey says. The opening is probably tweaked just enough judging by that dent on the the tank. I personally don't think there is a easy fix without getting into the paint. That's just my two cents.
