Trying to Understand My Ohmn Readings - Exciter Coil

Attached are photos of my original exciter, a used exciter and a new universal exciter coil from Kimpex. I've also attached pics of my meter with the leads not touching and touching. All measurements are with the meter on the 2K setting. The first pic shows my reading with the meter leads touching 000. The second pic shows a new universal Kimpex exciter at 000. The third pic shows a used exciter at 266 ohmns, which is within spec according to the manual. The fourth pic shows the meter reading with the leads not touching, 1 = infinity. The fifth pic shows the part I removed from the Big Red which also shows 1 = infinity. What does this all tell me? I know my original part is shot, but is my new one bad also because of no resistance? Here's another thing that's weird. My original part has 6 plates stacked, the new one has 5 and the used one has 4. It's looking like I should just install the used part

Ya I don't get that either. I do suggest investing in a good meter like a Fluke. Auto ranging true RMS. I have used cheap meters and got some funky readings and something totally different with a Fluke. Just a suggestion.

You're probably on to something. This isn't a top shelf meter. I'll get a "Fluke" one from our instrumentation techs, take a full set of readings and report back. Thanks!

Check the fuse inside your meter. Some have 2.

Also, if you can't get good readings with that meter after all, and it was THIS meter that led us to believe it could be the exciter, then you should perform all electrical tests an all components again once you are confident that you have a correctly functioning meter.

Judging back to what I remember about the diagnosis, you were getting some weird reading then as well, and it could have been the Meyer the whole time. Many meters have a ten amp fuse and a 1 amp fuse. When either blows it shows some funky stuff......

I did the exact same checks with a high end "Fluke" meter at work, same results; so my meter is good.

Got a reading now with my meter and the Fluke! Here's the deal I think, the generic exciter has a round metal loop sticking out from the middle of it. I suppose to allow it to be used across a variety of applications? I got the proper ohm reading from that; soooo I'm thinking that's the solder point. I'm going to try it and see if I get spark now. Just waiting on some gaskets and a seal.....always waiting.

Success! The old beast fired up with the new exciter! I'm not complaining but the spark still isn't what I think it should be. It's orange and on the small side. I swapped in a new CDI, no change, new coil, no change, new spark plug and boot, no change. Someone suggested my flywheel magnets might be weak. I'm going to ride it and change out the flywheel "some day". Is there a test for a flywheel? Maybe I'm chasing something that wasn't ever there; a hot blue spark? More riding, less wrenchin' is what I always say.

Outstanding!!!! The odds of the flywheel loosing its magnetism is remote at best. The SX is not known for a fat blue spark so its probably as good as its going to get.
