84 Yamaha 225dx shift forks and drum

Can anyone tell me if shift forks and a drum from different year 225DX's or 225DR's are interchangeable?

I finally got around to rebuilding the carb on our 84 225dx we bought last year, it starts and runs great..... Except it does not like to shift gears. Seems to shift better up than it does down, shifter is very spongy. I did adjust the clutch and no change.

From what I can tell and have read you have to pull the motor to do this? Anything special I need to know… other than this repair is a real big pain in the ass? The person we bought it from said "Yeah it runs great, it just hasn’t been started in a couple years and the carb needs cleaned" which that part was true. I rolled it back and forth when we looked at it but only ran it thru maybe 2nd or 3rd at the most and it seemed ok, but not the case I guess.

I was thinking of buying these on EBay… but if the ones below will work I would rather go with them and get the extra parts for a better price-

Cheaper and more parts- (not sure if these years interchange)

Has anybody done this repair or split the case on one of these, anything special I need to know or should look out for? Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

According to Partzilla the parts from an 84 225dx and an 85 225dx share the same part numbers.

I ended up going with this off Ebay.

Did you make this repair or get any help? It has been a couple of years since I have split a YTM case but I have been through a few. The worst part is stripping case bolts; make sure you is a good hand impact on those Phillips bolts. I would have a shop manual with me though.

Have you pulled off the clutches to inspect the shift mechanism? That is more often the problem. That is where I would start. I have bent one of the internal sift fork shafts before, that was the first time I had to spit a case.

Thanks for the advice Fox. I have not had it apart yet to inspect anything. Waiting for a couple days when I can devote a lot of time to it. I hate tearing things apart and then not getting back to it for a month or two... Especially if I’m not familiar with the motor. Never had a Yamaha apart so this will be a definite learning experience. I will post my findings.

I've found the best way to tell is to look up the parts diagram and compare part numbers I'd assume the reverse models (dr and drs) are different because they use a completely different final drive set up but I'm not sure on that never had a reverse trannie completely apart.
Here's a link to the parts diagrams have fun.
