Using quads for parts 2ND EDITION.

So to go along with my other thread im gonna be building another 3 wheeler with quad parts. I picked up a really beat up 1985 Honda 250sx about a mouth ago for $100. My plan is to pick up a trx300 engine from a guy I know and a 1987 trx250 swingarm. The details haven't quite been worked out but I would like to end up using white plastic but my only concern is finding the headlight housing in white. This is gonna be a bit longer build then my DX as im gonna try to get it done for Trikefest next year.

Sounds great! I would love to find a decent later model quad that I wouldn't mind converting to a kick-ass trike! Too many other projects in front of that idea though...

It had tires and handle bars when I bought it but I used the tires on the big red and the handlebars on my DX.

So just an update. I bought the white headlight bezel jakep53 mentioned and it should be here in the next week or so. That's on of the harder things I think I'll have to find hopefully.

It has some scratches on the top but I sprang for it anyway because well, I have the money now and knowing my luck I won't see another till I'm done or won't have the money when they pop up.

I finally picked up the trx250 250 frame, swingarm and engine. Now i just have to get the swingarm off the frame. Ive got the locknut soaking in PB blaster after heating it up as hot as i could. I dont have the right socket but that has never stopped me before. I may just break down and buy one anyway sicne it will come in handy with the bigred and the SX. I also got the Bezel for the SX from Dirtface here on the boards. Came in while i was at Trikefest.

So I got the swingarm off of the trx250 last night and let me tell you it was a pain to get it apart. I ended up taking an old 1 1/4 socket and cutting the 4 prongs into it. Worked good enough I can use it again on the SX to take it apart. Then I had a junk habor freight 3 jaw puller layin around that I cut the hex part off of used to turn it with a wrench. I shaved one end down enough to fit in the swingarm bolt and used a 2 ft breaker bar and lots of PB to break it loose. Worked pretty good for redneck engineering lol. I will break down and buy the right tools as soon as I can though to put everything back together.

Quick question, I know that there isn't an aftermarket exhaust made for the 250sx anymore. Does anyone know if a 250x/300ex exhaust will work on a 250sx? I know it would take some bending and modification but it seems like it should work.

why not just buy a nice used stock pipe instead of modifying something to work.

Well the end game is to have a trx300 engine in my SX. I'm also gonna see about using a 300ex carb I have laying around so I was looking for a better exhaust. Plus, I hope to paint or possibly powdercoat some things like the frame and swingarm. So I don't want something that's rusted or beat up. I REALLY want to make this a nicer build then what im used to doing plus it's different from all of the 250r's and more mainstream builds I see.

So has anyone made a custom exhaust for a 250sx or modified one to fit? I'm trying to work things out in my head before I get to that point.

Well I called DG Performance and asked if they had or could make something for the 250sx. First response was they didn't have anything for that but they would make some if I could get 10 buyers to make a run. Then they immediately said they would NEVER I repeat NEVER make an exhaust for the 250sx. Same thing with cobra exhaust. I'm kinda bummed. ..........

Well I picked up a 1999 trx300 engine thats missing the cylinder head and a set of trx/atc 250 wheels with Maxxis razor 2 tires mounted on them. Still trying to figure out the exhaust.

The maxxis razor tires on the trx250 swingarm. I have to find at least some 1 inch spacers for each side because the trx swingarm is 2 inches narrower then the atc swingarm.

Trx300 engine that needs a rebore and new piston. I'll probably used a head off of a spare trx250 engine that has a bad trans in it for parts for this engine
