Hey guys. I know that Big Red (85-87) mufflers are getting harder and harder to find. They rot out on the seam on the bottom and are pretty hard to repair. Aftermarket replacements can be expensive, and loud. I came upon a real nifty fix that a good friend of mine made. It's cheap and effective, and looks good and it not loud.
Tractor Supply has these in stock. It's a Stanley brand muffler for a Farmall Cub. They cost $30, and with a welder, can be fitted to your ATC250ES very easily. See picture for details. Just wanted to share as this is a great, easy, cheap fix for your Big Red muffler woes.

I wish I had thought of that. I think I am going to do this mod on my 86 BR, but I am going to make it removable and not weld it to the pipe. Thanks for sharing this information. I think you may have just saved some folks a bunch of cash and frustration versus trying to find a decent OEM muffler.
God knows they're not looking to make any effort to do anything, never mind move their foot to shift. If there was something that dispensed Cheetos every time they shifted that might be a different story. Welcome to America, where the biggest is best and even fat people who are too lazy to shift can climb a mountain.
I am currently in the process of fitting a tractor muffler to my 83 Big Red. Original was rusted beyond repair, Rural King had muffler for $19. Welded on nicely. Gonna cut the heat shield off OEM and weld onto the replacement. So far it looks great, I will provide an update on how loud it is once I get the bike out on some trails.
