mini racer thread...60 and 80cc pingers...who knows what and who has what?

my son and I have an idea.....

so watching that AMA National vid Billy and Keith just put up got me to thinking about the 2 stroke minis and the CR80 trike Hall? raced at TF.

    We have some questions:

    1) what frame/forks did they use back then?.....dirtbike?.....full custom?....another atc platform?
    2) class rules?
    3) did anyone here run one then or now? If so, what`s your setup?
    4) PICS PICS PICS ?
    5) why aren`t they more popular? 80CC dirtbikes around here go for $600-800 running and riding on average and I found a small stash of CR60`s a couple months ago.

it would be sweet if there were enough to run a mini suspended class at TF for 85cc and under.....we are considering building a couple (because 'cool' and cheap)
but for now it`s just in the idea stage.

    experiences? thoughts? comments?

Not many 2 stroke minis. The bigger classes would let twice the displacement 4 strokes run against the 2 strokes at one time, before they seperated the classes. You could probably do that with a mini class, but not many suspended minis around. I have 2 and blue27 has one, but all 4 strokes. There are maybe 4 2 stroke minis that I know of, unless others have built custom framed minis. I so could do a Tiger 80 if I found one for sale though.

If only you still had that KTM80 Pat. That's one bike you let go that just didn't make sense.
Baltimore---Charm City, or Harm City? Ask Pat.....

I've got 2 yt60s with the Molassi 70cc big bore kits, DG pipes and boyseen reeds. I'm not sure how the zingers would do against the suspended conversion 2 strokes? But they are a lot of fun, my zingers cost around 150 each before upgrades. Someone was selling a mini in the classifieds a while back...

My son transplanted a pw80 engine into an atc70 frame. It will be a flat tracker only machine. He sent the engine to a good friend of his and had it worked over a little. He also put a PVL ignition on it and is about finished with the exhaust. It should be out on the track in the next few weeks.

yeah initially this would have been a little discouraging but seeing how that 80 or 85cc trike did in the midsize suspended class at TF this year against the 200`s, I see it has no problems keeping up . I`m not averse to running one in that class as well.

I can`t recall who that was with that Lil Smoker.......Jacob Hall?

my son and I thought it would be cool to build one. I have a CR125 motor packed away too that ain`t exactly a mini but it used to haul my giant ass around real easy and would make a good trike mill.

Making a motor fit , lineup, and work is cake work for me....what I would really like to know is what chassis to use. Originally, we thought first gen 200X because it was small and suspended but that chassis ain`t exactly the cutting edge in the performance suspension department even by 1985 standards.

I've been working on converting my 82 CR125 over. Tri-Z forks/triples are a direct swap, just have to swap the lower stem bearing. Steering stops even work and the triples don't smash the rads!
too many bikes to count. too little time on hand.

I built the 85cc bike that my son Jacob rode in Mid Suspended at TF. It started as a 86 Atc250r frame. It was not easy to build because I wanted it to look like it was a true 80cc 3 wheeler. Ben Meyer built a really nice 80 using a Suzuki dirtbike frame. His has great ground clearance, and looks like it worked out great with the bike frame. His probably took half the time to build as my 80. We also have a CR60 powered 3 wheeler that I built for Jacob when he was about 7 years old. If you search CR60 Zinger the little 60 should come up.

83 ATC 60-R Cr60 converted with Zinger parts.
    83 ATC 70.
    83 Tri zinger
ATC 85-R Cr85 engine on shortened 86-R frame.
