How do I get consistent DC power from a 350x?

I need to add a small battery to a 350x to run some LEDs and a trailtech vapor.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get DC power out of it?

I'm remembering something from years ago about a moose regulator, but cant seem to figure it out.

    Any help appreciated.

Kasey I know you know, I remember seeing HIDs.

Depending on whether or not the stator is 1,2,or 3 phase, you'll need a corresponding regulator/rectifier. The a/c voltage is rectified to dc, and the regulator shunts extra voltage to ground, creating a regulated source of dc power. For example, if you have 2 charge wires, it's a 2 phase or' full wave' stator, and you would find a reg/rec made for 2 phase charging systems. Many, many, many reg/recs will work, they are all built essentially the same way, just some diodes.

The aforementioned 2 phase reg/rec would require 4 wires.... 2 input wires from the stator, generally white or yellow, 1 black or green wire for ground, and one charge wire connected to the battery, generally a red wire.

Yeah, while that answers the question, I can't even begin to pretend to understand what that means for me seeking this old moose part #.

I'm also unsure of the output of the 350x stator. I'm remembering something in the 175 watt range.

I need a small battery and enough extra juice to run some incandescent or LED blinkers and a LED tail light.

Why not just mount a battery to run the LEDs and stuff without worrying about the trike charging the battery?

Run it total loss and recharge between rides? I don't know about the Trailtech but a the LED blinkers and tail would run forever on a 4-6AH battery.

That would work, but honestly there would be less effort over time if you just do the mod.

How did the wire in the GOKI electric start kits...I didnt think they came with a new reg and rec?

Wouldnt hat mean the 350x is capable of supplying the right voltage?

Here is the Goki wiring schematic. It basically just uses a jumper wire to "link" the reg/rec to solenoid, thus charging the battery. The yellow wire is the provides power to the start button and provides the battery with the regulated voltage from the reg/rec to charge the battery. The blue wire comes off the electric start button and goes to the solenoid to actuate it to send battery power to the starter.

    Thank you!

Will tapping into the yellow wire still send excess voltage to ground while charging without frying the battery?

I think tapping into the yellow wire will send AC to the DC battery. I don't see that ending well.

I read somewhere the Goki wiring includes some kind of diode to sort of convert the AC to DC for charging.

I searched a bit and could find no details but I found this interesting thread on the PilotOdyssey forum (lots of Gokis on the 250s):
    http://www.pilotodyssey.com/PO/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1313

Also mention on that forum about using a TrailTech regulator/rectifier and floating the stator ground instead of the Goki setup - something about full wave vs half wave and my eyes glazed over...
    http://www.trailtech.net/7004-rr150

And Frankencelery talks about floating ground in this post:

Basically, you need to "rectify" the AC to DC and "regulate" the voltage to "12V" or 14.1 or whatever "12V" really means.

If its single phase (2 wires from the stator) you can get a KZ305 regulator/rectifier combo for cheap, I have used them in the past with good results. If its 3-phase (3 wires from stator) the Honda CM400 has a nice 3-phase reg/rect, and parts for those are cheap too.

Float the ground off the lighting coil and run it into a Kohler reg/rec. then you run the battery to chassis ground and the 12v hot out the reg/rec is your charge wire.
too many bikes to count. too little time on hand.

Reg/rec suggestions are all good, but again, they are all the same guys. The process has been explained to the point where you either get it or you dont, and if you dont get it, then dont try to wire your own stuff. There are qualified mechanics to handle that.

Last I checked there wasnt anyone forcing you to engage or read this thread.

I was curious as to how goki avoided the issue entirely.

Thanks for the replies. The piece needed at the local tractor supply is under 30 bucks.

I'll supply a part number when I pick it up.

    Thanks.
