Talking RESTO MOD atc 70 SHORT VIDEO!!

Late last year I picked up an 85 atc 70 with the plan of just getting it running and riding it as is.. The pit bike in the picture was thrown in on the deal for $50 with a locked up engine. Seems the main bearings were rusted up in place. With a little work and oil i had the pit bike running in no time and later sold it for what i bought both of them for. The picture is from the day I brought them home.

So after finding a pull starter and swapping points I finally got the 70 to fire up and run. But it seemed I never could get the points set just right, the timing marks weren't lining up and the spark sucked. So after cleaning some electrical contacts and replacing the timing chain I got it running but was still having issues. I finally gave up on the stock engine and started swapping in an electric start 4 speed chinese quad engine. I wanted the reliability of the CDI ignition and the convenience of a 12v electrical system. In the process I found a new set of tires and painted the wheels. I mounted them up last week on rims and got the rear wheels on the 70. Now im just waiting for my forks to have the tabs welded on for my headlight. These are some pictures up to where I'm at now

Just finished up sand blasting my 70 forks in prep for paint. I had a buddy at work weld on the tabs from an old set of junk 110 forks. What do you guys think?

My goal is to have it look as if it came from honda like that. I think it will look better than a round or a aftermarket square headlight considering it's an 85.

Looks great. I like the headlight idea. What's the story on the stand?

I picked the stands up after my grandpa passed away. I'm not sure what the original purpose for them was but I have found that a jackstand fits on top of it. I figured it was to make use of short jackstands when you needed to work on a truck or car with a lot of frame to ground clearance. It also works well for a dirtbike stand and for when your 70 has no forks........ lol

Forks are painted. Should be ready to assemble the front end, controls and wiring once the paint dries.

Well I'm back a square one with the paint on the forks. The clear i used reacted with the the color and wrinkled the paint. I used rustoleum engine enamel clear over the rustoleum sunrise red in the hopes that the engine paint would help with keeping the paint from getting messed up if i were to spill gas on the paint since it is gas and oil resistant. So now im going to re blast the forks and repaint them

With rustoleum you have to either put clear on right after painting or wait a few weeks for it to dry. Stuff takes forever to dry because its oil based

The tank should be done next week. The inside was pretty rusted so its soaking in vinegar till i get back from drill Sunday night. Then Monday or Tuesday morning I'll take it to work and sandblast it and get it ready for paint.

If vinegar doesnt work try evaporust. Worked well for me on my 70 tank. Also watch for flash rusting after you dump the vinegar out. I didnt do this and it was worse than before

So far my tank has been ok. I poured out the vinegar and neutralized it with baking soda and water. Then i sprayed it with WD-40 to keep it from rusting. I may be using a stud gun to pull the small dents out once I get it blasted.

So as of right now I have less than $120 bucks in the 70. Not too bad for low buck lol

$150 for the 70 and pit bike.
    -$150 after selling pit bike
$60 shipped for 5 NEW trail wolf tires (only used 3, still have 2 left)
$27 for spray paint for wheels, forks and tank
$10 3 for new o-rings for wheel halves
    $20 for a used 110cc E-start chinese clone engine.
And a kids quad that I'm using the harness, cdi and starter solenoid from that i got for FREE!. The rest of the parts are coming from my personal parts stash or from friends of mine

So i almost doubled where I'm at on my budget overnight (as if i actually had one). I bought a Chinese crf50 exhaust, an intake adapter in case i have clearance problems and a new starter that was missing from the 110cc engine i have. I spent $70 on those parts and I'm going to buy the battery box later today from hondaatc70.com.

I do have a question though. What intake and carb combination are you guys running on your 70's? I'd like one with a cable operated choke to mount on the dash pad I have. I'm wanting to use a stock style thumb throttle from a 110 without the kill switch so what throttle cable could I use? I haven't gotten far enough to mock any up so I'm not sure on the length. Im just trying to see what is commonly being used. I'll be using 110/125m bars cut down to 70 width if that helps.
