    mossbarger reed cage

Are these really any good-if NEW? I got a VF3 that is worn out (cage is worn too) & lookin to replace it with something better-I havent found all that much feedback on the old school Mossbargers on a 250R- just alot of hype from their old claims-

    That's what I like/use.

Don't believe the hype on any cage, you will be disappointed if you do.

Keep in mind the stock cage with www.carbontech.com reeds are hard to beat.

Is a spacer recommended or not?-(for the Mossbarger)

For a older air cooler, Yes I like them. I also liked boost bottles on them. (Call me crazy) I even built a adjustable boost bottle and learned alot.

For a more modern 1985-86 250R, No unless you like playing around with stuff... Which I do.

On a modern 2 stroke the difference, if you there is a difference can only be felt by a experienced tuner/rider, plus they cause carb clearance problems.

Note- mounting a reed spacer on the "Wrong" side of the cage will make the trike "Feel" different, sometimes good, some times bad, this idea was passed to me from a couple of well respected industry type fellows.

I ran a 1Dir Racing cage in one of my 85's for awhile. I bought a grab bag of about 7 used reedcages to include a Mossbarger and I found 1Dir's cage to be identical to a Mossbarger as far as I can tell. I still have both, they sit in my box of extra reedcages.

The trike did run strong with them, but seemed to need unusually large jetting for an OEM cylinder with just carb, reeds, and FMF pipe. I'm talking jetting like my 350 big bore runs here. Some guys here whose opinions and greater experience level than my own that I respect and value told me that due to the cage design being so overly focused on CFM they kind of lack in the area of maintaining intake velocity and thus requiring unusually fat jetting to keep the engine happy. The trike did run well, but I wouldn't say it was a freak giant killer or anything.

It seems now that 1Dir Racing is out of business as I needed to replace the reed petals and was unable to find any trace of them on the net other than some controversy on various forums. So, with no source for reed petals I quit running the cage.

I am not sure if Mossbarger is still in operation or not, but I would take that into consideration before deciding on that type of cage. Might be a smarter move to get a cage that still in production and replacement parts readily available.

Needless to say, I run an ESR cage in the big bore and a Boyesen cage in the second '85 that has bolt-ons. The Boyesen cage was in the aforementioned grab bag and just needed new petals. And with an ESR top end on the other, I figured why not run his reedcage too.

Try not to get sucked in by hype... alot of times, it is just that.
    Trikes:
    '85 ATC 350R
    '85 ATC 250R
    '86 ATC 350X
    '85 ATC 350X
    '84 ATC 200ES Big Red
    '84 ATC 125M
    '85 ATC 110
    '85 ATC 70/110

The only problem is, that takes too long to say. Perhaps we should coin the phrase "induzbros" to shorten it up a bit. Now let's try it on for size:

This idea was passed to me from a couple of "induzbros." (air-quotes optional)

See how much easier that is? It rolls right off the tongue. Although, it might be just annoying enough to make it into the "Words & phrases we hate" thread.
