    Racing 90open quad

Day started out awesome. Tuned new engine. Went for test rod. Shifted to 2nd and

So swapped clutch and stator into spare motor.

Well after swapping in new motor. Top end was bad. So swapped good top end off new motor and finally got to go for a test ride and BRAaaaaaaP

More carnage. This is a price of the output shaft transfer gear. Poof!! Espoded into several chunks. Too much power!!

Ouch. So are you the one test riding and breaking the quad or is it your son?

I know we talked about it many times, but seeing that picture reminds me why I blueprint and polish racing transmissions, clutches and some engine parts.

All those stress risers will lead to failure if pushed hard.

I went through the trackside rebuild motor. Runs like a raped ape!!! So powerfull that I have to Change the rear sprocket to smaller for more top end and speed due to wheel spin. We run the same tires the pros run and he is rostering like a mad man on them.

went through the top end we used that day and it is perfect!
going to do some special tuning for this weekend as the temps are dropping in my area. will also change the rear sprocket out for 3T smaller one. This will help with the roster tailing since he needs more speed and traction is not a problem.
he has the chance to take 3rd in one of the classes this season and 4th in the other!!!!!
    Fingers crossed!!!

Did it break when you shifted gears?

I looks like there is some wear in the filet/radius at the base of the gear and as you know, there shouldn't be any there.

It also looks like the face of the teeth are pitted/spalling but its hard to tell . If they are, I would use the best oil you can get.

As you may know, the gear broke because of the amount of torque applied to it . . This gear set is designed for around a 170 lb vehicle and a 120 lb rider and a tire that gets less traction then you can get from a set of good ones on that quad.

The most problematic gears will be 1, 2 and 3.

You can do a couple different things to reduce the potential for breakage if you want.

    1. Use an electric die grinder with around a 1/8" bit and radius the edge of the radius a little at the base of the teeth.

    2. Have them cryogenically treated . . The place below has done work for NASA and the military as well as racing cars etc and are one of the biggest cryo facilities in the US.

3 . If you want it to shift smoother, have them REM finished or Tungsten coated . . I posted some info about both on your Baja 1 build thread.

    4. Call Red Line and ask if you can run their "Shock Proof" gear oil in a wet clutch transmission . . It "may' cause clutch slippage, but it may not.

You can still buy Hoosiers in many different compounds and tread patterns including a knobby.

This is the one I used and it worked very well for the tracks I raced on . . I ran then under 10 lbs psi.

    .
If you widen every other horizontal groove to around 3/8", they will slide a hair better but will have more forward bite.

the issue we have is 90% of the tracks are "preped" and the dirt is VERY loose, so we are forced to run knobby like the MAXXIS RAZAR tires.
