    83 250r questions

Hey guys I found a 1983 250r on Craigslist it was in a storage locker for years with a locked up rear end. I payed 750.00 for it and he said it was free when he parked it. After I got it home I got the tires moveing. Its still hard to move backwards but rolls forward easier could it just be the brake caliper? And is there any adjustments to back off the pads? I says 4130 chromoly made in usa. On the swing arm. Also does it look like aftermarket rear plastic? Any help would be great!

You might try swinging the caliper up off of the rotor to see if that's your problem. You can download the service manual here: http://www.oscarmayer.net/atc/manuals/ to see how to do that if you don't already know.

That's good news! I would say just rebuild it...and do the front too while you are at it. All you need is the service manual and a rebuild kit (about $20 on eBay). It's not hard to do at all really.

I had to rebuild the front and rear calipers on both of my '85s as they were either locked up or leaking air. The hardest part for me is getting the Pistons to pop out if they are frozen...lots of compressed air! I would imagine that you have a frozen piston or the pivot pins are rusted/frozen and won't allow the caliper to "float" any more. The rebuild kit will have everything you need unless you have a badly rusted/pitted pivot pin. If that's the case I bet it's still available from Honda (they are for the '85R and 350X).

Those plastics are stock and look to be in good shape..so does the tank..not a bad score for $750 if you can get it running for cheap..

I ordered the rebuild kits for the calipers on ebay. I can't wait to get this thing together! I took it down my driveway and it runs awesome! so different from my other 3 wheelers I actually have to hang on
