Always used steel braided lines and soft brake pads on my 85 250R/200R/500R, are yours locking up to easily or just not enough brake power?
I swapped a 450r caliper on my old 86 trx, I wouldn't call it an upgrade, but it was a cheap alternative.

New build.Braided brake lines are a defjnate. The rear caliper is in pieces curently and in rough condition.
If its an 86 a front caliper off of a YZ125 will bolt on the rear of the 86R with a 16th or so of filing to one mounting hole. I have been running mine for 4 years like that

If you have a custom mount made you can use a TRX450R or something off a YFZ. If not just rebuild it. Takes about 5 mins if that if ya have all the parts.
Jason what year of YZ125 front caliper did you use. i'm in need a good alternative for the rear for my 1986 250r. thanks
Trx 450r requires nothing custom. All bolt on oem parts.

problem solved...use a TRX450R one! Might be a little pricey compared to new $10 pad and a $20 rebuilt kit from bikerchic on ebay. You can always sell your working one on ebay and let everyone jack up the price so the 450R one is about free. I'd still pop out the cylinder and clean it up if the seals are decent.
will the caliper bolt onto the 250r brake stay or will a 450r stay be needed?

I know a guy that did the swap, and he said to use the 450r hub and rotor, brake stay, caliper, and fade nut. He said you will need the 250r threaded sleeve because it is a little longer. He said it fits and works great.
I'm doing the yz swap now, a caliper from a 98-03 yz 125,250,400f will work I believe.
