Finally Got my Willys Jeep! - 1952 M38 Cdn

After many years of searching I bought a second owner, Willys 1952 M38 Canadian model w/winch with 30K original miles. Drove 1200 km round trip to get it yesterday; road trip! There were only 2000 built in Ontario, Canada and only 400 of them had winches. It's still 24V but the ignition has been converted to electronic and the front brakes upgraded to 11" with auto slack adjusters from a Wagoneer. This was a regular driver for parades and such; needed to be safer. It came with all manuals, a fording kit, antennae, a NOS gas fired heater in crate, period correct gas/water cans, lots of new/used parts and a Willys powered Gen set skid on trailer. The motor in the genny is supposed to be NOS too. I paid lots but the last appraisal was for 20K in 2007. It runs, drives and shifts nice with tight steering. I've got some plans but not for this year. Detail orientated if you get the drift.

    Nice score, good job.

By detail orientated do you mean it will be converted to a trike?

Ha ha, not quite. Meaning I have some research to do. I'm researching maintenance records and history records from the Canadian government. I want to know it's full story, what unit had it, etc. Not sure if the olive drab is period correct (doubt it) and there's a few driveline oil leaks to address; which means the tub will come off and an overhaul done. Black out markers are missing too. Probably replaced by signal lights to make it legal? Can't leave it alone you know. My plan is to drive it when it's 100 yrs old, if I'm alive, lol.

I know. Lot of weight to haul that far! I may remove the genny skid and convert that aircraft maintenance trailer into something I can put my golf cart on.

Nice! There was one of them in a barn that belonged to an old widow we would cut hay for when I was about 14. The guy I was working for had been trying to get her to sell for years with no luck. I don't recall a winch, or a roof but it was in nice shape with no rust.

Glad to see yours found a good home,

Unless the oil leaks are bad, don't worry about them. I tried to stop them all on mine and it almost seems like they were meant to leak a bit. Alot of the seals are kinda a leather material and don't seem to be "dripless". That is a real good find. Keep it out of the sun. The oil cloth canvas degrades quickly in the sun. As for the color, they came in numerous different colors and shades depending where they were going. I had documentation on mine that put it in Okinowa Japan and the color was more of a brown than a green, just like the color of your gas can. If you look at things like the engine block, trans ,transfer and differentials there might be service tags riveted to them. They did this when they got serviced and you can trace the numbers back to where it was at the time of service. If you find some service tags on it make every attempt to avoid messing them up. It increases the value of the jeep. These old willys are like mountain goats. They don't go very fast (50-55 mph tops), they are uncomfortable as hell, ride extremely rough, don't handle for crap, but that's what makes them a blast to drive. I don't ever remember getting stuck in mine.

Do the windshield wipers still work ?. A lot of folks don't realize that they were non electric, vacuum operated off of manifold pressure so when you step on the gas some times they stop because of the vacuum drop.

Great find! Should be so fun. I like it. I will trade you my truck, the wife's car, a couple dirt bikes, a quad, lawnmower, 2 chainsaws and even the kitchen sink.

Yes they are supposed too work but the seller says the vaccuum tubing is clogged. Apparently the vaccuum is created by a dual action fuel pump taking vaccuum from the other side of the diaphragm, and yes they will stop when you don't want them too, lol. I'll get it fixed up in no time.
