Stator on my 200X- Not original-Unknown Coils

This is the Stator on my 200X- Not original, trying to identify what it is off.

Back in 95 when i broke my cover badly and got hold of this one, I was told it was off an XR, would do the job, and it has and still does as far as i know.

-Unknown Stator Coils- I cannot find any of the XR's that have this type of coil setup, searched XR parts schematics 80-86 and other ATC200 models also, cant find a match for these coils. Anyone tell me any info on them. They have four output wires, i only used the 2, but im curious what the other two are used for? The larger coil is much larger than my original 200x coil [I still have it, no case for it though] and =360 ohm, the covered coil [middle sized] has one wire only and =306 ohm, the smaller coil =continuity.

which of the coils is the lights? I assume the smaller due to continuity only [no ohms]

I think that's an XL185/200 stator. The XL's had three coils like that, one was a charging coil for the battery, one was a lighting coil for the headlight and high beam indicator only, and the third was the typical source coil for the cdi. I have one around somewhere, but I just looked, and can't find it at the moment to compare to your pics. Try going on Partzilla, I think you'll see that the XL's all had three coils instead of the two you'd find on an XR or a 200X. Hope this helps!

XL185 1979 - 1982 according to partzilla, it does look like it , thank a million for the tip. I need one bolt to hold the coils oo, so i wanted to check the parts availability, good tip mate, cheers,.

Another question. Do the stators from a ATC200S / M / ATC200, fit onto a 200X stator cover/sideplate?

They look very similar to the X, two mount screw holes, but looks like they mount on 90 degrees more on the crank axis than the X mounts. Has anyone tried rotating them and mounting them into a 200x?

Not many parts out here in Auz for the X, we gotta get creative!

I really don't know. I do know that the flywheel on those is backwards compared to the 200x, all the auto clutch/ pull-start models had the coils inboard of the flywheel. No idea if the flywheel ID or coil mounting dimensions are the same. Interesting, I never considered auto clutch models as a donor. If you find anything out, please post up about it.

I only went off the parts schematics, they appear the same, but it aint no guide for installing them, i dont have access to one so as to try it, but it "works on paper" Another thought, im no electrics guy, but would the 90 deg rotation of the coils, effect the timing of the coils' pulsing/phasing, to a degree where the CDI/timing is affected, it may not matter, just wonderin.

The bigger coil[single] on mine would be the charging coil ....yes? So i could leave that out of the assembly i assume. That might be a good idea because the end withe output wire is either worn down from flywheel contact [flywheel markings do suggest this scenario] or has been ground down to clear the flywheel, either way, might be best to leave it out, ive seen other bikes with only one sided coils. The double coi has no such wear marks and checks out @ 300ohm and continuity, so all good.

I cant remember if mine is the original flywheel or not, im pretty sure it is [hell, it was way back in '94], but my memory cant confirm this. I ultimately would like to get an original X casing and replace my ignition coil on the original 200X setup that i still have. It has a large chip in the ignition coil and no circuit, from where the chain broke and destroyed the original case.

Also, the double coil, which has 3 wires, i notice that theupper most coil has 2 wires [continuity between them] but there is no continuity to the case [earth] when measuring between either wire and earth. I thought both circuits on the 200X use the body of the cover as the earthing path.

Logic tells me that i should use the double coil, - 300ohm coil for ignition system and the other coil to lighting system, but i would need to earth one of the wires, either internally to the casing, or, externally to the frame. But will doing this, kill the lighting coil [short it out]. Im no electrician, but know almost enough to say that earting the coil to the cover should just make it into a 200x simile type coil. I assume one of those wires is earthed externally on the XL185 anyhow, might be miles of the mark though.

Pehaps i may be better using the larger single coil [grind down to avoid flywheel] just ignition power out, forget about the lights. I wonder if the larger coil, being thicker wire and larger then both the double coils, might be a stronger output for the ignition sytem electrics, wouldnt that be a good thing?

Im trying to find the wiring diagram for the XL185 1979 - 1982 as reference, no luck so far.

I got a 1980 185XL diagram, the unearthed coils are for the charging circuit, and one coil each for the lights and IGN.

So, im wondering if i use the unearthed coil, or the bigger earthed coil for the lights. The bigger coil has a 360ohm impedance, so to me, thats suggests it is unusable on the 200X, as total resistance of the lighting circuit would increase, put a large loading on the coil, not good i would think [probly wrong??]. If the 200x manual wants only continuity for the lighting coil, im thinking the unearthed coil might be a better option, then earthr the 2nd wire back to the frame up under the tank somewhere [im thinkin:- 200x earthing shares the frame earth, unlike some bikes that have seperate earth wires], hopefully all is then good.

Earth, lol. Over here we use the term ground, earth in the electrical sense makes me chuckle every time. For the ignition coil, use whichever single coil that most closely matches the spec for the 200x. I assume the wires are all cut, therefore you can't go by color? Honda color codes generally stay the same from model to model, so is there one with a black/red or pink wire as the XL diagram shows? As far as the lighting coil goes, they are designed to supply the correct amount of power in Watts for whatever lights Honda built into the circuit. Therefore, the 200x lighting coil is the most powerful, since those had 60W headlights plus a taillight, both at 12V. XR185's had a 35W headlight and a taillight at 6V, and XL's had just a 35W headlight at 6 volts, and the taillight ran off the battery. I have no idea what the power output of the battery charging coil from the XL is. If it were me, I'd try to find a 200x lighting coil and use what you have for ignition.

I have a 200x light coil, works fine [it the original], but will it fit the base plate is the question, ill check it. I'd say alot of those coils interchange? ......hopefully!!??

Any suggestions as to where to slpice the new wires into? The wires are cut, just stick about 1/2 inch out through the grommet/rubber, i was thinking of joining them insde the grommet, then insulate with silastic. I would like to join them inside the case, but what would i insulate them with, electrical tape i doubt would hold up to the temp & oil, and i cant source the proper woven that mine has [a small piece = 1/4inch] ....[though i do have fibreglass electrical insulation tape =circa 1986]. Silastic would most likely end up in the motor. What is that "laquer" that the coils are sealed with?

The old grounding Vs earthing debate, were right, ...of course! Australia uses Multiple Earth Neutral power wiring to our houses, think thats where the term comes from.

For insulating the splices, I would use heat shrink tubing. Slide a piece of it onto the wire, make your splice (soldering is the most secure method if done properly) and use a heat gun to shrink the sleeve onto your splice. It should hold up just fine to oil and heat.

I finally located my original 200x flywheel and coils, i know its a big ask, but does anyone have a sidecasing/flywheel cover for the 84 200x for sale?
