    My 85 250r winter restoration

Feel free to make suggestions or ask questions

I know R builds are pretty common but thought I would share my build and update back with more pictures and comments as it progresses. My attempt is to make it back to a good reliable condition with my taste on upgrades

I am having powder coating done locally frame and motor mounts will be RAL 3001 signal red

Levers, brackets, pegs will be powdered gloss black

Swing arm will be super chrome powder with red pro link decals

Attempting to polish many aluminum parts myself. I have been doing some research I invested in a table top buffer, rouge stones, buffing compounds, and a large variety of wet dry sand paper

Plastic is Maier low profile in back, Maier front fender, and original tank, headlight bezel, and shrouds all in decent shape. I am going to try to remove scratches and bring back the new shine

Wheels and tires are staying what's is on it as they are pretty new. I will just clean them up nice.
Stock front wheel 23 inch Kenda front max
Back wheels bead locks 18x10x8 Itp turf tamer mx

New parts on order so far- some received already
    Lone star Axcalibar axle
New double row bearing carrier packed
    Mostly all Polished stainless bolts
    New braided front brake like
New front axle bearings, steering stem bearings, swing arm bearings
    NOS rear brake reservoir
    NOS kickstart rebuild parts
Billet Aluminum brake stay for the 86 swing arm upgrade
    Blue silicon radiator hoses
    Fresh fmf packing
Eastwood 2k gloss black engine enamel spray paint

The engine and carb setup and part of the build is undecided. I am going to work on getting the R back to rolling chassis and give me some time to decide what engine and carb work will be done. I'm removed a good running engine and stock 85' round slide carb.

Some pictures I took of what I started with. And a few after I got the tear down to the frame done. I will post better pictures of what I am starting with another day.

An update for the project... a comparison of my forks after getting the first one polished

Wet sanded 220 to get out light nicks and scratches
    Then wet sanded 320, 400, 600, 800, 1500
Used brown, white, than blue rouge compound and finished with mothers billet polish

I got the second one done just no pictures, but results were the same as the one in picture

Honestly I wish I knew where it came from... it was on the trike when I got it several years agos and haven't been able to find another one like it. The only difference is it takes Trx 250r front pads. And the previous owner had to drill an additional hole in the 86 style brake stay. Haven't had any issues with it.

To the OP, you may already know this. When clamping down nuts or flange bolts on PC, especially the swinger make sure you lube that surface with 3-1 oil or some equivalent so the powder doesn't give. Also make sure you have all pieces together correctly the first time. Taking bolts off and on powder that are around torque areas run greater risk of cracking the paint.

I didn't actually, guy that did the coating didn't mention that. I'll be sure to do that then.

Nice project. Everything is looking great so far.

What black did you end up using for the powder coating? Looks like a 50 percent gloss at first glance.
