86 big red reduction gear question

Just picked up an 86 250es yesterday that had the starter reduction gear destroyed. The Kickstarter works great with no slipping or coasting. So I'm wondering if I'm ok to run the machine like it is with a new gear? Or will it shred the gear again? Again I bought it this way so I don't have any history on it.

I would be concerned about the bits of gear that sheared
the starter gear is not far from the main block and most certainly connected

id pull the right case and and oil filter to see if there are bits around
the magnate on the stator will attract the bits also so youd probably want to pull the flywheel

Ok, thanks good advice. If I understand correctly, the cause of the gear failure is the one-way bearing. But it certainly seems better than a lot of my other 250's. That is as far as the kickstart.

I might ad this looks like a fairly low hour bike as it has original tires with decent tread left on them.
