^^ Holy ATC King, I would have thought you came from the rust belt of the US with a tray like that!

^ Shep, Congrats on the Groms! Funny how close those colors are to a K1 US90, wink, wink

I have been finishing the inside of my garage. The structure has been here for longer than we have and finally! The building is a 24x30 foot and has always been framed and roofed with outside panels. Of late I have insulated, sheetrocked, and mudded. The upper sheetrock has hurt me. lol my age is showing itself to me. just touched up the last 5 spots with mud and waiting for them to dry then the primer and paint. The whole reason for even doing this now is the building is no longer a glorified storage unit, but my shop. I am a 35 year steel fabricator who quit his job and now I am working to do my own business. Got my LLC and looking to be insured in a couple weeks. going to give it hell!! I have very little equipment but will start with what I have. been doing "side jobs" for years and still have been doing them by word of mouth the last while since I quit. But looking to go legal.

Finally got around to checking the SD cards in the trail cameras we picked up while snowshoeing in post #3605. As you can imagine, I'm very happy by the amount of moose in the area. If you check the 3rd picture closely you can see the open pedicles confirming that that the antlers are dropped. From the date stamps it looks like it happened between the last week of Jan and the first week of February. As soon as the snow pack is down the hunt for bone will be on! BTW, this is literally within 1 mile of the heavy oil plant I work at that's devoid of all wildlife and an environmental eyesore according to Greta.....Could it be she got it all wrong, lol.

Picked up a vintage automotive O-scope
It looks hardly used, even the button have no fingerprint grease stains
Hooked it up, now to start learning a bit more (damn electricity is black magic)

    Does 1-8 cylinders
    2 or 4 stroke

    So basically everything!

I will slap it on all machines to learn

Those old scopes are still useful. Last shop I was at still had one of those, but I only got it out once or twice jus to play with and see if it still worked.

A good way to get into reading ignition waveforms, if you got it cheap enough. Most people still want stupid prices for old diagnostic equipment, that $100 can buy new now.

Basically anything with a spark plug, you can at least use some of the functions. It'll do a power balance test, and that'll give you a really good idea about cylinder operating condition on multi cylinder engines. It's going to much more useful on older vehicles with distributors, and even older ones with points.

Just being able to read waveforms, once you get to understand what you're seeing, will tell you a heck of a lot about what's going on in the engine. It's mountains better than pulling plug wires with an engine running, or holding the brake and loading one in gear to force a misfire.

The huge drawback on that old scope is it's stationary and live. No easy way to drive with it in the vehicle and it doesn't record data.

I've haven't tried any of this with the old scopes like that, just newer handheld ones.

Depending on the scope and what back probe accessories you have, it may be possible to look at injectors, electric motors (fuel pumps), and other electrical components that use or produce some type of oscillating electrical pattern.

Throw an amp meter, and a few other tools into the mix, and you may be able to do quite a bit with it.

I mention using it to look at electric fuel pumps, because you can just tap into the fuse for the pump, and see if it's bad, before it actually goes out. You can also count the poles on pump with the scope, determine the RPM, then use and amp meter to see if it's straining under pressure.

That unit doesn't record data, but you can use your cell phone to video it. That's not a perfect situation, but it'll allow you to record baseline data on something that is good, so if it flubs up in the future, you'll have the graph to compare it to. Having a record of known good scope data is a HUGE benefit when running diagnostics. There are paid subscription, automotive websites that have a library of the stuff. It's that valuable.

Edit: Here's a short video using a scope on the ignition secondary side and the fuel injector to determine the cause of a misfire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXrd1fYwj1o

    It does record and freeze
It also does have injector function or can just set to volts

It did come w some connectors but there are more

Mostly will use it for my small engines, jeep etc

    Really just a 200$ experience/experiment

    Here is manual for a
    Fun read

That link was awesome, I won’t be getting into those kind of diagnostics

That manual give some pretty good examples of various waveforms.

I mean something completely different about recording. Freeze, yes, it'll do that, and store the info for a bit, but it's memory is completely different tech from the new stuff. You won't have a file, and certainly nothing that can be manipulated and compiled with other information.

When you get some waveforms, certainly post up what you're working on and what you found. Primary side of a healthy trike ignition? Dwell on a ATC70/110? There's probably not many people who've hooked up a scope to them, it'll be interesting.

Although you may not be getting too deep into it, here's another video showing how much information a scope can provide to mechanics who already have an advanced working knowledge of the vehicle they're working on. It also touches on waveform libraries and a place to look. Start at about 2:40, to get past the intro stuff.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYHphciFnH4

I do want to point out, that kind of diagnostics being done in the video actually saves owners money, and fewer things are likely to be monkeyed with since they used the information to narrow down the problem, before touching anything. It isn't just a bunch of malarkey used to charge more money, and the people that do this stuff on a daily basis are sure enough techs, just as much as they are mechanics.

It is amazing stuff, those posts/links

I will post up some healthy machines and what I can find
    Interesting to say the least

I would love some of the testing apparatuses shown in the videos but no justification for costs

(Especially since I got another forklift today, don’t tell wife)
